Also can't find a Butterworth household in Rochdale in 1901 with both an Alice and a Beatrice.

If you gave us his father's name (rather than just occupation) from the marriage certificate, it could help.

Next to try is the 1911 census.

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

Unfortunately, only two Arnold Butterworth-s born 1901 +/- 3 years appear.

The first seems to be the one born 1900 in Rochdale, and the other the one born 1900 in Halifax.

It also gives no results on a search for a Beatrice Butterworth living in a household with an Alice Butterworth. ?

You will want to do the search at FreeBMD to get the information Janice gave -- to view the image and be sure the information was correctly transcribed, before ordering the certificate.

If you're looking for his ancestors, you are probably going to have to start by buying his birth certificate.

Your basic tool is FreeBMD.

Eek, two Arnold Butterworth-s born in Rochdale, one in 1900, one in 1901. If you are certain of his birthdate, you can order the 1901 one, with the information there.

Birth index. A certificate would give you parents names including mothers maiden name, which would help in finding their marriage and them on 1901 census
