Jacky Thank you for the offer, as you can see from the thread I don't have a lot to go by, only the fact that my Gran was named as Jane elizabeth Smith b1868. On the 1891 census she was born yorks but on the 1901 census she was born Leeds so I'am not sure were she was born. I do think that maybe the 1891 census might have just made a mistake as all the people seemed to come from york . It would be nice if you could see if there are any jane elizabeth Smith born in 1868, I think now she was a single mothers child who for some reason could'nt keep her?
Kind Regards Haold

I think Harold, this maybe 1 mystery that is not going to be solved, even if we found a Jane Elizabeth Smith of the right age, without a marriage certificate we could never prove that it would be her......... very frustrating!!!!!!!

The lady appears from nowhere and then does a disappearing act.......... not easy to follow 1 like that.

Harold I hope that your other family names are easier for you to trace, and tell the Grandchildren not to marry extremely popular surnames, it should make it easier in 150 years time for their descendants!!!!

Dee xx

Hi all, I was on the site yesterday looking for Jane e Smith b1868/9 Leeds or Yorks. She was my Grandmother and she lived with Henry Lamb and Had 7 children with him. Could'nt marry as Henry had been marriade before.
Dee was very kindly helping me find her. I think Dee may be right in thinking that Jane e Smith was in fact Elizabeth J Smith and if Dee is still looking, I was up most of the night hunting Smiths, and I my have found them on th 1871 census but not sure? a Catherine Smith with Annie age 4 and Elizabeth jane age 2 Could the Kate be short for Catherine. David was in lodgings in Peterborough, he was a train driver on both census. But can't find on 1891census. I know it is asking a lot , If you are still there Dee is it possibe to check this out for me!!!
Kind Regards
Harold

Ooh Smiths don't you just love them....

The Jane E Smith born 1867 Leeds, parents John and Ann are still in Armley Leeds in 1881 and 1891, so I wouldn't think this is your lady.. and the Jane E Smith born 1870 Leeds is still with her parents in 1891..... so another 1 ruled out.

I can't find any census info for this birth;

Births Jun 1868
-------
SMITH Jane Elizabeth York 9d 57

I think this maybe the lady I've been following with the parents being David and Kate, and I'm hoping this is your Grandmother... however proving it is going to be difficult.

Looking at Elizabeth Jane Smith again, there was only 1 possible marriage for her.... I haven't been able to find our lady with the possible spouses.

It seems strange that on the 1881 census for this lady her complete name was written down, this is often a sign that she went by her middle name........... so we could be on the right track......... very similar name....similar dob......... same area as Henry Lamb in 1881, just frustrating that I can't tie it all in for you Harold.

Hi Dee, I misread one of your messages, Henry Lamb my grandfather b1855 was reg. under the name Lamb.
My father Henry Lamb b1897 was reg. under Lamb. Hope this helps with the confusion of Lamb and Taylor

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 30 Mar 2009 17:16

I've been looking for the Smith family I found earlier, the father David is living with another lady and her 2 elder children, can't see Kate Snr, I may have found Elizabeth Jane Smith working as a servant close by in 1891, however it's definate................ so we still need to find a DEFINATE with your lady Smith.

Has the 1911 census thrown up any extra clues???

Hi Harold,

I'm struggling to trace the Smith family prior and after 1881, I'll keep digging for awhile longer.

I just thought , however might be sheer coincedence, that a lady with a very similar name is living in close proximatey to Henry .....
