Well, I think she altered her given names when she married, for starters.

That's not uncommon. My grandmother Lily became Lilian when she married in 1918; my grandfather thought Lily was common.

We had a puzzle here recently that was solved when I found the Kathleen Marion who had married in the early 1900s being born as Kate Mary.

There was a big shift in names in the late 1800s and first part of the 1900s, for both girls and boys. I think people who found themselves entering the new century with old-century names sometimes took matters in their own hands once they got a chance.

Evelyn was a newfangled spelling of the name that was Eveline up to the late 1800s -- although there were 50 or so Evelyns born in Yorkshire 1871-1874.

Beryl was barely known as a name before the late 1800s. There were two Beryls registered in Yorkshire 1870-1880, e.g.

So I'd maybe not rule out variations on the given names theme.

(But yes, I had ruled out the Evelyn Beatrice I was looking at because she was found to have independent existence.)


Stannus. Any idea where that comes from?

I would think maybe it was her original surname, and Cater was her stepfather. But there's no Stannus birth to match ...

Evelyn Beryle Stannus Cater appears on her marriage certificate as 25 years old in April1898 which would make her born C1873 and yes she did become a Hammond.She was supposedly the daughter of Reuben Cater.I don't think that she could be Evelyn Beatrice Ashby as the wrong second name and wrong age.Evelyn was definitely born in Hull Yorkshire as her husbands name is correct and my grandfather had a brother called Arthur.

On the spelling thing, also note that it's more likely she was born Eveline (or Evelina) and changed it to a trendier spelling when she grew up / married.

But what, you haven't seen people lie about their father's occupation on marriage certs, expecially post mortem?!

My grx3 grandfather the ag lab became "gentleman" on his son's second marriage. That son was a mining agent of some sort, and on his son's marriage certificate he was a cook!

I'm feeling for you, because I have a grx2 grandfather Reuben I can't place either. ;)

In the early records he's variously Rubin, Ruben and so on, so remember to keep that in mind when searching.


... FreeBMD has no record of any kind for given names "Reuben Cedric" ...

Only problem, Evie, he's a cabinet maker, a far cry from a veterinary surgeon.

Well interestingly, Evelyn doesn't seem to have been born either!

Have you found a birth record for her? I don't see her in the GRO index before her marriage.

There are other marriages during apr-june quarter?

where did he live?

My great great grandfather appears as Reuben Cedric Cater on my great grandmother's marriage certificate but he does not appear anywhere on the BMD.Can anyone help? Idon't have any other info except he was a veternary surgeon and had died by April 1898
