Astra, how did you find him in 1841??

I finally just got him in 1861:

Name: George Moate
Age: 43
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1818
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Thomas
Gender: Male
Where born: Fenwick, Yorkshire, England

Civil Parish: Fenwick
Ecclesiastical parish: Fenwick and Moss
County/Island: Yorkshire

Thomas Moate 83
George Moate 43 - unmarried
Mary Ann Moate 40
Caroline Moate 39
Henry Moate 34
Maria Moate 13
Jane Pickels 20
Francis Senior 25
George Rimington 13

Yes I think it's his father! I'd go so far as to say I know it's his father!

Why else would somebody name their kid George Maples Moate anything?!? ;)

You lucky pup you. My gr-aunt's middle name is Lewis, and we know her 'father' was her mother's employer. Yippee, somebody named Lewis. Well, I suppose they couldn't name my aunt John or Augustus or Elvin Lewis. And it probably wouldn't have been wise to name her after his wife ...

Yup, I think we've found him!

Ah. I would think maybe one or the other, not both.

Moast . ha, Most likely Moate, as being the last one before the surname.

It is MOATE then, not MOATES?

The Maples could be a family surname on either side.

I searched FreeBMD and census for anyone with given name Maples (or middle name Maples) and surname Moates ... nothing ... but okay, I just did it again for Moate.

Deaths Mar 1874
MOATE George Maples 56 Doncaster 9c 414

Same name, previous generation (born about 1818), could that be his father?

Hi
Sorry i dont have much to go on but i will put what i have.
Anne Riley b1823 in Owston west yorkshire, she had a son George Maples Moate Riley b1843 in Skellow Doncaster. I do not have a marriage for Ann and on the 1851 census george is living with his grandparents William and sarah.
So i think he was born out of wedlock and wondered if he was given the name maples moate as they did in those days as a non direct link to his father.

Hm - MAPLES MOATES is the surname?

What do you have about it now? People? Loads of people would be eager to start digging around to see what/who might be found, but need something to go on. ;)
