Hi all you are some fantastic people .Ihave my grans berth cert she was born in 1910 her mother was isabella gerrie and farther alexander meldrem robertson.my gran mared william williamsonin 1944 after his first familey was killed in the war.Alexander m robertson is on the war graves comision as war ded and bured in mendingham.and this is wat is confusing me.

Mary

Mary Report 23 Aug 2011 20:58

Sorry to dissapoint but the marriage posted for banff isn't her either.
She was born 7/12/1890 to Alexander Gerrie 1852-1925 and mary forsyth 1854-1940.
There is a tree on Ancestry with this family.

Helen Dorothy Robertson born 29/3/1910 died 1973 in Stoke Newington.
She married in 1944.

So has Bryan got her birth cert. If Helen Mitchell Robertson had died before and couldn't be Helen Dorothy's mum.

I received PM form Bryan this morning and I advised on a copy of the will or death certificate might give him some clues.
Also there were the births for Robertson nee Gerrie, maybe one of their certs would prove either way.

Maybe, Mary, if someone has access to the rolls -also if I were Bryan I would apply for a copy of the Probate and Will to see if Isabella is mentioned and if so in what context

Probably a complete red herring but there is a marriage in Banff in 1920 of an Isabella Gerrie to James Peter Robertson -was he Alexander under another guise -did they nip up over the border to marry ? Was the law different there?

Mary

Mary Report 23 Aug 2011 20:22

I wonder if the address where Alexander Meldrum Robertson died would throw up any clues on the electoral roll.

Mine was on Ancestry , Potty, so if yours was elsewhere then it is Ancestry which is in error. Thanks for confirming they are one and the same, but registered under both names
I have ascertained that Isabella was born 26/9/1891 Fraserburgh but trying to find her death with this doesnt bring up any obvious one

Potty

Potty Report 23 Aug 2011 14:28

Gillian, I cannot find the 1915 birth of Helen Dorothy Gerrie, but there is one in 1910, with the same vol and page nos as Helen Dorothy Robertson:

Births Jun 1910 (>99%)
GERRIE Helen Dorothy Fulham 1a 182

GillianMac

GillianMac Report 23 Aug 2011 14:07

And also ,Bryan, where did you get the idea that Alexander died 1917 in France -Maryb had posted details of his death in 1928 together with probate

GillianMac

GillianMac Report 23 Aug 2011 13:26

Bryan has pm'd me to say his gran was Helen D Robertson -presumably the Helen who is shown in 1911 as 1 year old, and she always referred to Isabella as her stepmother
Ther is a birth Helen Dorothy Robertson 1910 Jun Q Fulham 1a 182
BUT confusingly there is also a birth 1915 of Helen Dorothy Gerrie with the same district , vol ,and page number Fulham 1a 182
This must be the same person but which year is correct?

In 1901 Alexanders wife Helen is shown as Ellen M Gerrie aged 14 so at most she would have been only 16 on marriage
She died 1908 Fulham aged 21 1a 169, so it would appear she was not the mother of Helen Dorothy, whichever year is correct

Hard to say why she would have regarded Isabella as a stepmother but families spun stories to circumstances.

GillianMac

GillianMac Report 22 Aug 2011 10:38

I wonder about this marriage
1933 Dec Q Hendon
Isabella S Robertson to Robert Nicholson

Could she have used Alexanders name for respectability's sake?

Mary

Mary Report 21 Aug 2011 19:22

Alexander meldrum Robertson married Helen M Gerrie if Fulham 1902.
He is the one on 1911 census with Isabella Terrie (Gerrie) sister in law who it seems then had Jessie Daisy Ruth registered in both surname.
Then maybe 3 more children Robertson nee gerrie.

Alexander Meldrum Robertson born @ 1878 died 9/12/1928 Brentford
Probate 16/4/1929 no mention of his marital state.
Alexander Meldrum Robertson of 9,The fairway,Acton,Middlesex
Prbate to Phillip Edison Jones engineer and Reginald Ernest Day a clerk.
Effects £1,873 10s 3d.

Edit Philip edison Jones born 1902/3 to John Jones.

Bear in mind at that time it was illegal to marry your deceased sisters husband so they could not have married even if theywanted to, but seems thye had children together
