Oh yes -- good one, Christine!

(And well worth saying twice ;) .)

Ooops, duh. They were different years. All the better!

Sorry, Caroline - different time zones, but there's always somebody around with answers. ;)

If you really want to get into it, you will want a basic UK subscription at Ancestry. You can get a 2-week free trial subscription to check it out.

www.ancestry.co.uk

But FreeBMD is, yes, free --

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

-- and that's where the marriage and birth info posted here (for getting certificates) comes from.

Do play with it and find those records for practice, for instance. It takes practice, and learning tricks (searching with as little info as possible sometimes, in case of misspellings or dates way different from what you'd thought), but it's a barrel of fun once you get the hang of it.

Hi Julie
have just been on the website and have ordered 2 birth cert I need to trace back any further, thanks.

Are there any other websites that are good to use

Julcoe

For certificate go to this site...

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

which Janey has already given you and order any and all the certificates you want.
All you need (along with the name, year etc) are the Vol. & Page numbers.
When ordering you will be ask if you have the GR numbers, tick YES.

I also live in Australia and have never had any problem getting certificates.

They cost about $15, depending on the exchange rate and take about 10 days to arrive.

This could be him in 1891:

Name: Edward Parrett
Age: 8
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1883
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Thomas
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Where born: Woolwich, London, England
Civil Parish: Woolwich

(Parrett and Purton married 1876)

but you need to start with the marriage certificate and work backwards.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 25 May 2009 01:58

This would presumably be their son

Births Mar 1904
PARRETT Edward Talfourd Woolwich 1d 1369

but the Talfourd name doesn't appear with any earlier Edward.

Dates help a lot. When did they marry?

... Easier just to answer.

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Marriages Sep 1903
Biggs Caroline Woolwich 1d 2296
Parrett Edward Woolwich 1d 2296

As we all do, you have got to start by buying that marriage certificate, to find Edward's father's name for certain.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Can you say where you have the info that his parents were Thomas Parett and Elizabeth Purton? Census, birth certificate ... ?

Caroline

Caroline Report 25 May 2009 01:50

Does any one have any info on the Parretts of Woolwich in my tree I have a e\Edward Telford Parrett married to a Caroline biggs
I think his parents where Thomas Parrett and Elizabeth Purton but nit sure has there is also a Thomas Parret married to a Lizzie.
Any info on any of the parrett family of woolwich would be great I believe Edward had his own coal business which his son Victor ( called MIck) helped him run.
Caroline died in child birth in 1919
