My Gt grandfather, John McFadyen was born in Scotland c1872. In 1891 he married Eliza Freeth (b c1873) who was born in Bilston, Staffordshire, England. The marriage took place in Tynemouth and they settled in Wallsend and by 1901 they have 5 children: Margaret, Eliza (my Nan), William, John and Sarah Ann.

I am trying to find out who John's parents were but have no idea what area of Scotland he hails from. I subscribe to Ancestry.co.uk and am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to find out who his ancestors are.

Thanks Suzi

I was trying to see if I could find out without getting certificates as I've spent plenty of dosh on certificates already but looks like I'll have to if I want to make sure the info is accurate.

I do already have the details and the censuses you've put on here - that's where I got my info from.

Do you have any idea how I'll go about tracing Scottish ancestors though? - the marriage certificate is only going to give me his father's name and occupation so I'm still wondering how I'll work further back from there.

Two doors away is another John McFadyen age 49 born Scotland with wife Margaret born Ireland..children George 16 b Scotland, Alexander 12 and Elizabeth 10 both born Northumberland.

This could be his family...you need to find a marriage probably in Scotland between 1861 and 1891 for father John to mother Margaret..hoping that her name is Small.

Scotlandspeople is the site...and you can see the certificate with names etc. If it seems the right one then you need John junior's birth cert to confirm the parent's names.

Thanks Suzi

I'd noticed the other McFadyens and wondered if they were his parents but didn't just want to assume it and start following the wrong bloodline but wasn't sure how to go about finding out if they're definitely related.

I've just off the GRO site so hopefully it won't be too long before I have the marriage certificate. I'll take a look at Scotlandspeople - I did look a few weeks ago and managed to spend my credits but couldn't get anything displayed so will wait for techno hubby to come home in case I'm doing anything wrong.

Thanks again for your help - it's much appreciated.

Tootsie....
John McFadyen 's parents were John McFayden born Scotland 1841..Mother Margaret b.Ireland 1846...check 1881 Census for Longbenton...they lived at Fisher St with John George and Alex...incidentally Fisher St should be Walker (as per Alex's place of birth)..not Longbenton.....

Gosh thanks so much to everyone for your help.

Erin - where did you manage to get the information from? Maybe I should subscribe to that site as I assume I am going to need to chase Scottish records to get further back too.

I do have the name Eliza Small but was wondering how to go about chasing the Irish connection hence the reason why I recently signed up to ancestry.co.uk.

Thanks for the offer of help Paula - I'm not sure where I am with this side of the family yet so wouldn't know what help to ask for but I really appreciate the offer.

Tootsie. I found the McFadyen,s on the 1881 Census for Wallsend which you can access the Census on www.familysearch. org.

Eliz.Small was a widow at the time but had a brother-in-law John Small b.Ire. living down Kelly St.as a lodger.
Dont know how familiar you are with Wallsend but there was a large Scottish Irish Community living there.
The Reg.District for Wallsend is Tynemouth and for Walker it is Ncle.
The RC Church serving the community at the time was St.Aidens (Willington Quay) and later St.Columba's Wallsend. Walker was served by St Anthony's.Records for all are deposited at Ncle Archive's Blanford St.except for the Baptismal Records for St.Columbas which are still held at the Church.

Hiya everyone,

Oh I love you lot - you've been absolutely brilliant and I can't thank you enough for your help.

I don't know Wallsend very well - just had holidays there with my grandparents every year in the summer hols. I'm planning on going there for a visit this year though when I've collated lots of info and can see if the addresses people lived in still exist. Just want to get a feel for the place. I may do some graveyard visits too - how ghoulish. LOL

If there's anything I can ever do for any of you (I'm a bit of a novice but I'm getting there) please let me know.
