This Thread now includes Nottingham City marriages as well as the rest of the County...but being Phillimore Records, they only go up to 1812 generally..and sometimes to 1837...when BMD's take over.

Hello Derek
(I am a near 'neighbour'- Bobbers Mill!).For years I have searched in vain for the birth of Joseph Stanley (shown as a husbandman) & his marriage to Elizabeth u/k. In 1701, their first son William was born in Kirkby-in Ashfield as was all of their children.
I know Joseph died in 1735-the church records show that his grandson Joseph Stanley was born the same year that his grandfather died. There was another Joseph Stanley & his wife Frances in Kirkby at the same time having children, who had married near to Derby. As Kirkby wouldn't have had that big a population at that time, I wondered if they might have been related.
It's a bit sketchy but, if you should come across Joseph & Elizabeth whilst doing searches for other people, I would be eternally grateful!

Philippa..........sorry to take so long replying to you......I` have found all four children you mention........but for the life of me cannot find an appropriate Gervase or Jarvis Gibson...annoying thing is that all four children are old enough in 1841 to be independent.thus none of them are living at home with their parents.......
The Radford Marriage records end in 1812 as do all the other Nottingham marriages.and I suggest the marriage took place 1813/1814.

The only marriages on IGI are York 1803 to a Mary, and Whitby 1817 to a Margaret.

All the details for the four children are available.

Sorry ...Derek

Joan mary.......Hi Joan,,sorry its been so long..been very busy in Derbyshire.
All i have at the moment is THEODOSIA TALMON COCK married JOHN SCHOFIELD of Sheffield 14.04.1799.at St.Mary's Nottingham.

Theodosia was baptised in the Baptist Church....not easy to find records for Non-comformist. EDIT have found Theodosia baptism 1781...daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth.

The Wombles of Wellow

I’ve been doing a bit of googling and George Wombwell of Menagerie fame seems to have been born in the 1770’s in Essex.
This is what I’ve got so far on Uncle Ken’s Wombwells

Grandmother – Sarah Wombwell born 1880 Staffordshire. I have a copy of Sarah’s birth certificate

Her parents – William Wombwell, born 1848 London, occupation Musician and Rebecca Forbes born 1843 Dundee. Married 1874, Sheffield. I have a copy of William’s birth certificate.

William and his brother John, another Musician, appear on the 1871 census for Dundee and Wombwell’s Travelling Menagerie was known to visit Dundee.

William’s parents were John Woombell born c1820 in Wellow, occupation Tailor/Musician and Susannah Clay from Laxton, Notts. They married in 1845 in York. Again, I have the certificate.

All the moving around would seem to indicate that they could have been part of the Menagerie.

This is where we enter the realms of submitted IGI records that need checking.

John’s parents were George Woombell, c1796/1801 Wellow and Susannah Keeling c1796 Worksop, Notts, married 28/7/1816 - extracted

1851 - as Wooinbell
Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 2135; Folio: 127; Page: 20; GSU roll: 87765.

George’s parents seem likely to have been William Woombell 1760 Wellow and Ann Webster 1765 Wellow.

Going backwards from there
William Wombell c1735 and Anne Roper?
Thomas Wombell c1702 and Alice Bowrin
William Womble c1652 and Elizabeth Whitlam
Lawrence Wombell c1626 Walesby, Notts and Isabell Mother
Thomas Woombell 1606
