I believe that this is indeed my Peter McNiven. Can find his hatch and match but not his dispatch! x

Unfortunately, as you know, the only way to prove or disprove the theory that Peter McNiven died in England in 1930 .... is to buy the certificate which should register his father's name.

Pity they're so expensive compared to 5 shots at Scotlandspeople for the same money.

Blimey O Riley, these Peter McNiven's are nothing short of figments haha. I will keep looking. I believe he was a book-seller so if he was selling encylopaedia's, perhaps he wanted to try out a few of the routes!

However, I looked for the Peter (W) McNiven mentioned in the death for 1930 ... born c.1896 .

I would have expected to find him in the 1901 census in England ... but there's no sign.

Not that it proves anything but it's another wee bit of information to keep aside and ponder over.

Anything is possible, it would certainly account for how Alice met Fred! Not sure I could see her moving back to Glasgow on her own though (if she and Peter had moved and then he had died) and then having a baby in Glasgow (Dad was born there) and returning to London with baby and soon-to-be hubby 'in tow'. Like I say, anything is possible...

Although Peter McNiven was born in Scotland,

Just wondered if the reason a death can't be found for Peter in Scotland is that he died in England.

Thought maybe he and Alice decided to move there after they were married.

Yes, just saw that one. I do believe that the McNiven family all came from Perth in Scotland though. All of my Grandmothers family (Scott) were from Glasgow. The Mckenna's originated from Ireland and then over to London around 1901. They have remained there ever since (except Dad who went to Newcastle around the 1950s).

No, no death. Strange huh?
Unsure how Alice met Frederick John (my Grandad) but there are stories that they met in Glasgow and he used to WALK back and forth from London to Glasgow to see her until eventually taking her back to London to get married and settle there. As my Dad was born in 1932, he would have been 2 1/2 when his Mum and Dad were married. Now in his late 70s he has just had a visit from some of his brothers and sisters (all younger) who I think mentioned that he doesn't look like any of them. Poor Dad, got me to thinking... Although he is the oldest, Dad didn't even know Alice had been married to anyone other than his Father - until very recently...

Thought maybe Peter and Alice may have moved down to England after they were married ... so looked for a death for Peter there.

2nd marriage in 1934 (sorry, I said 1932 before) took place in Woolwich, London on 24th August.
Frederick John Mckenna (Batchelor) aged 29 years of 39 Hylton Street, Plumstead to Alice McNiven (Widow) aged 26 years of the same address. My Dad was born in 1932 which means that Peter McNiven was insignificant by the beginning of 1931 - so a short lived marriage to Alice Murray Scott for whatever the reason.

Did it say on her marriage certificate she was a widow ?

Previously married to Peter McNiven (Presuming she re-married in Scotland)

You can see my dilemma...I am left wondering how my Grandmother married as a 'widow' in 1932 when I can't find any evidence of a death...a wild guess would suggest that he was not in fact dead. I have been looking for deaths in Glasgow because that's where they married and that's where they lived. How she met my Grandfather (who was from London) is another mystery...

I didn't actually view the certificates.

Just checked on the index ... by process of elimination was able to narrow down the dates and locations.

I've looked for the birth and death of Peter McNiven using different spellings and combinations of names. No sign of him.

Wow Helen, thank you. Does the information you have found, give any detail as to who registered the death? I wish I could find Peter Jnr's death between 1927 and 1932...
