This gets even stranger doesn't it?
I suppose it is a possibility that Eliza's biological father was named Blake and for some reason she called herself that on 1901 and 1911 census returns.
If she knew his name was Blake why didn't she enter his surname on her marriage certificate?

Searching in 1911 for

Eliz*
born 1884-1890
in Bondleigh

look who we get:

BLAKE ELIZABETH 1887 24 Crediton Devonshire

may be living with:

BLAKE JAMES 1847 64 Crediton Devonshire
BLAKE PHILLIP 1888 23 Crediton Devonshire

Can't tell without viewing the transcript or image.

Yes, yes ladies that definitely sounds like Elizabeth in 1901 - so it seems highly that Eliza Jane would be somewhere in the area - just where??
Ladies your help is so much appreciated - A*******

This is about the only Devon Elizabeth of the rightish age going in 1901 in the Haslemere area:

Name: Elizabeth D Stake
Age: 15
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1886
Relation: Servant
Where born: Torrington, Devon, England

Civil parish: Haslemere

James Cleghorn 59
Tryphena Cleghorn 43
Desymons Barrow 77
Mary E Barrow 66
Mary Brown 37
Annie Coleman 32
Alice M Lawrence 25
Maude Ragless 20
Elizabeth D Stake 15

- and I think it probably says Blake.

It is so strange that I cannot find Eliza Jane on the 1911 census, I feel even if she did 'adopt' another surname in 1901 (if Elizabeth had remarried) I feel she would have reverted to her Webber surname in 1911 when she would have been working, probably in Surrey or Hampshire area.

Have just check Elizabeths 2 brothers in the 1901 & Eliza isn't with them

Susan

Susan Report 8 Jul 2009 22:20

just checked 1901 census for Elizabeth Kingsland - her place of birth was given as South Tawton and not Bondleigh and there's no mention of Eliza only children produced from her marriage to James Kingsland ...

Yes that makes sense - I've just had a quick look at marriages on bmd for Elizabeth Webber but no name 'rings any bells'.
In 1901 Eliza Jane would have been 14 years old so may have been 'at work' - I've looked at Devon, Hampshire and Surrey areas but without success at the moment!!

I see that Eliza is with Elizabeth on the 1891......maybe Elizabeth got married after 1891 and Eliza is on the 1901 with Elizabeth under Elizabeths married name......But when Eliza married she went back to her name of Webber

Hope that makes sense

As far as I know, just applied for copy of birth certificate .....
On Eliza Jane's marriage certificate father's name was left blank!!

Is she Elizabeths daughter

I've had no success whatsoever in locating Eliza Jane Webber (born Bondleigh, Devon in 1887) on either the 1901 nor 1911 census returns.
Eliza Jane Webber appeared on 1891 census living with her grandparents at Bondleigh.
Eliza married Arthur Gordon Torkington on 6th August 1913 at Hambledon, Haslemere.
She seems to have 'vanished' between 1891 and 1913 ..........
Has anyone any ideas or suggestions?????
