There are memories of a member of the Hazell side of our family in the UK receiving a payment from possibly a relative in Tasmania in the 30's. Relatives may be from the marriage of Alfred Thomas Hazell 1863 and Sarah ? 1865? Living in St Pancras in 1901. My Nan Elizabeth May Diggins married his son Edwin P Hazell in 1917. He died in 1934.

These are the only male 'Hazell's" on the Tasmanian 1936 Electoral roll

Alfred Charles Hazell
Clement David Hazell
Ernest Elliott Hazell
Robert Owen Hazell
Sydney Hazell

But there are 30 names on the Tasmanian bmd list , the earliest being Mary b. 1765.

You will need to trace the family to let us know possible family who immigrated or were transported.

Much easier to find if we at least have a name, dates are good too.

Hi All, thanks for the info so far. Perhaps I should have given more info. The only cert I have so far is the marriage of Edwin Paul Hazell, 31 years, Private, Middlesex Labour Battalion, (Father: Alfred Thomas Hazell, Builder) to Elizabeth May Diggins 21 years, (Father: James Diggins builder) on 30/7/1917. Pancras 1b 189. I have the 1901census with Alfred and Sarah with Edwin 14, which matches, at least b1887. There are 9 other children from Rose 23 down to Robert 8 mths. Is this the right Edwin, Pancras 1b 64? I'm afraid Julie that the tasmainian Hazell's don't match the one's from you! And Carolyn, I don't think there is a connection with Bristol? The Tasmainian connection comes from my sister's memory, but until she told me I thought the person there was a Meads, the male side!!
Sorry for the confusion.
Terence.

Sorry Julie, I meant that your Tasmainian names don't match the 1901 census I have.

On the 1881 & 1891 census records, the info would have been given by Alfred (& Sarah?).

They have included middle initials !!

Alfred "H" & Sarah "E"

So Edwin's father would not have been Alfred "Thomas" as Edwin stated on his marriage registration, but possibly Alfred Henry ? ?

With that in mind I think that the following is a possible marriage for Edwin's parents.

You would have to buy Edwin's birth certificate to prove (or disprove) this.

England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index: 1837-1915 about Alfred Henry Hazell
Name: Alfred Henry Hazell
Year of Registration: 1875
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Islington
County: Greater London, London, Middlesex

Regarding my query about Hazell's, I have just had an email from the records office saying there is no trace of Edwin Paul Hazell born 1887 Pancras 1b 64. I have emailed them to inform them of the variations (Lazell, Layall) from Julie. Can anyone tell me what happens now? I'm thinking I might have to keep paying using variations until I get the right one!!!! As you know you lose £3 every time they do search!!

Very Strange !

I re-checked and even clicked on "View Image" but it definitely says .. Vol 1b Page 64

I was even thinking 'did they check with 2 "L" s, but they do not check a name, they check the volumn..

Did they say if the page was damaged ?

If you are reasonably confident, that the previous census records are of your family, then you might have to buy siblings birth certificates to find out Sarah's maiden name.

We Know that Robert was only eight months old on census day (31 March) so the following is probably his registration.

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915 about Robert Hazell
Name: Robert Hazell
Year of Registration: 1900
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Fulham
County: Greater London, London, Middlesex
Volume: 1a
Page: 271

In 1911 Edwin is with his sister, Caroline Susan b. 1884. So I have added her registration also.

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915 about Caroline Susan Hazell
Name: Caroline Susan Hazell
Year of Registration: 1883
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Pancras (1837-1901)
County: London, Middlesex
Volume: 1b

Sorry folks, especially Julie. I have checked my order information and I had put the September quarter 1887 for Edwin Paul Hazell when I should have put the March quarter. I have phoned GRO and was was told that they only check each side of a quarter given and correct it, as I found last week with another certificate. As I was 2 out, no result!!
So my apologies to you Julie for my mistake, as you have been most helpful. But it is worth knowing for others regarding that GRO will only search either side of a given quarter. I will now re-apply for 'that' certificate.
Terence.

Well at least there was a reason why it was not found.

Better luck with this next attempt.

Hi All, especilly Julie. I have just received the birth certificate for Edwin Paul Hazell. Born 30th Jan 1887, (Reg: 4th Mar, Pancras1b 64, informant S E Hazell), It now confirms the mother as Sarah Elizabeth (Ashton) with the father as Alfred Henry Hazell, gas fitter's labourer, living at 5 Sandwich Street, Pancras. Perhaps now I can try and find if any of Edwin's siblings went to Tasmania. Perhaps Eileen has some information? There does not seem to be any matches with any Meads either at the moment.
Terence. (South Australia).
