Hi Julia,

this could be the witness Henry, his occupation is a cabinet maker which would fit in with Charles;

Hi Dee,

Thank you so much for your reply and for taking the time to look for me! yes sorry it was Silk Mercer, I looked it up on Google and it stands for Silk Merchant.

Witnesses are Henry Mansfield and Maria Milland or at least it looks like Milland.

Interesting what you said about her boy's names, there is also a Henry for the witness so maybe they added the fathers name wrong?? strange?? the fathers are both listed as alive as it does not say they are deceased, hope this helps.

Thank you again for your time,

Julia

Hi Julia,

I still have my doubts about the fathers name Henry, here are her boys from the 1881 census;

Frederick Charles Sandall 9
William Thomas Sandall 7
Frank John Sandall 5
Jesse Edward Sandall 1

Not one named Henry!!!! Ok, it wasn't compulsary to call a child after your parents................. but it was the common practice to do so, so why not when she has 4 sons all with middle names??? Just doesn't add up to me....

Hi Julia,

Are there any witnesses on the marriage cert? And could Henry's occupation be a Silk Mercer?

Hi All,

Today I have received the marriage certificate for my Charles M Sandall and Elizabeth Bulger!

Dec 25th 1860 - Parish Church in Widcombe, Somerset

Name: Charles Major Sandall - Full Age - Bacholer - Occ. Tunner - Add. Summerlays Place - Father. Charles Sandall - Occ. Tunner
Name: Elizabeth Bulger - Minor - Spinster - No Occ - Add. Summerlays Place - Father. Henry Bulger - Occ. Silker Mencer.

I was hoping when I received the certificate that it would have their ages! but it only says - full age and minor which is a shame!
They also lived in the same street - Summerlays Place - but no house number given?

Now that I have Elizabeth's fathers name - Henry Bulger and occupation would it be possible for your help in finding a census or any more information on the family please.

Thank you for your time,

Julia

Thank you Rambling Rose and Heather Posi,

Rambling Rose, thank you for this census record some interesting information to keep.

Heather Posi, thank you also, interesting what you said about the name!! I've just spoken to my mum and she is going to order the Marriage certificate, so we should have the name soon, I'll keep you posted! Also a little about Charles Major Sandall - he was not a soldier like this name imply's - it's a middle name that has been handed down the generations after my 6 x Great Grandmother Joan Major born 1736 married a Sandall man and it was added in her will that the name be passed down to all the first born males.

Thank you again,

Julia

Hi Margaret, Denise, Heather and Peter and thank you all for your help,

Denise, interesting what you said, could be a possibility, something to keep in mind.

Margaret, thank you for the birth information.

Heather, I have no certificates yet I'm affraid, sorry.

Peter, thank you for the census record - this may be them, could be why I've not been able to find them.

You are all very kind, thank you very much.

Its really interesting/intriguing because - the name Bulger seems to be almost exclusively Irish. I had wondered if this (and the fact she appears to have married a soldier) meant that dad was a soldier and hence the reason for her not being apparent in some census.

However, Peter's find threw me a bit (well done on that Peter) because the name Bugler does seem to be West countryish origin. If you enter just that as a surname a whole shoal of Buglers come up in Hampshire, Dorset and from somerset.

So Im afraid that it may be a mystery until you get that marriage cert for dads name.

don't know if this is relevant? maybe a brother, in which case the family might have moved between Elizabeth's birth and marriage? or possibly parents died...though again no record of Bulger deaths for bath

Hi Julia,

I've had a look for her in the 1841 and 1851 census.... she doesn't appear so maybe her mother remarried/married and she's under her stepfathers surname???
