Hi Linda - I got your PMs and by the last one figured out that you had meant to write to Ann. You got that sorted? ;)

I hope so, if you two do have the same famlies!

Edwin Report 1 Sep 2009 12:13

Linda here.
I can't believe all this information is actually out there. I got stuck at Sidney Charles Hewitt and Ellen Augusta Myers and without other known relatives or the opportunities to search properly I couldn't move past them. And all so interesting.

Well that's certainly him - because that amazing stroke of luck had him in the 1901 actually giving the *address* where he was born!

Here's the marriage:

Marriages Sep 1880
Hewitt Henry Walter Islington 1b 477
Payne Emily Islington 1b 477

But no luck finding them in 1881.

Unless she was going by Louisa!

1881

Civil parish: St Mary Islington
Street Address: Park St No 28

Henry Hewitt 24 - Engraver
Louisa Hewitt 21
Henry Hewitt 1

Nope, that's not them; in 1891 in Islington:

Henry Hewitt 34
Louisa K Hewitt 31
Henry T Hewitt 11
Louisa M Hewitt 9
Harold R Hewitt 8
George Hewitt 6
Amy Gertrude Hewitt 4
Margaret A Hewitt 1

Does the birth cert give Henry's occupation?

Ann

Ann Report 29 Aug 2009 15:22

Don't know if Henriette was French but I understand Nancy,France is more or less on the border with Germany, so that could be the answer. From what I remember of my grandmother Ellen Augusta and my great aunt 'Mart' I must say they had a certain je ne sais quoi, quite out of place in Islington in those
days!! Thank you for the pages,I'm just starting work on the other information supplied.

I think the Meyer family may have left England once before for a longer time (maybe the c1894 photo was on a visit) -- I had absolutely no luck finding them in 1881.

And that would be because in son Peter's 1901 household, there are:

Martha Myers 20 - born Marseilles, France! - c1880-1
Walter Myers 18 - born Paris, France! - c1882-3

So I suspect his family was in France at the time, and he and Hannah joined them shortly after the census.

In 1871, Peter's mother is Henriette. Both she and "Henrch" are shown as born in Hanover, Rothenberg. Was Henriette actually French?

You didn't actually expect to find that you were Continental, did you? ;)

I'm sending the images for

Sidney Hewitt in 1901 with mother Ameila (Onslow)
Hannah Myers in 1901 widowed with children
Peter Meyer in 1871 with parents
Peter Myers and Hannah in 1881

with best wishes for the wee one. ;)

So grateful, all this info is a bit much to take in all at once! will spend the rest of the day matching things up. have ordered Sidney seniors birth cert. perhaps that
will help solve one problem. The list of Meyers children solves one mystery, have a photo taken in Nancy, France of three girls, one known to be granmother Ellen Augusta, other two must be Martha and Annie,Ellen Augusta is about ten years old, so the family must have gone to France again about 1894. Too much of a headache to wonder why, will save that one for later. Many thanks.

What a funny coincidence.

I think it's coincidence, but I thought I'd just put it here in case.

Looking for Hew* in St Luke in 1881.

Sidney Sr's middle name was Charles.
Henry's middle name was Thomas?
Did their mother Amelia have (half?) brothers Charles and Thomas?

1881

Name: Charles Hewett
Age: 14
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1867
Relation: Nephew
Where born: St Lukes, Middlesex, England

Name: Thomas Hewett
Age: 19
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862
Relation: Nephew
Where born: St Lukes, Middlesex, England

>>> Street Address: 3 Rahere St (Private)

James Warwick 38 - widower, Educational Toy Maker!
James Warwick 15
Elizabeth Hewett 42
Thomas Hewett 19
Charles Hewett 14

Name: Elizabeth Hewett
Age: 42
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1839
Relation: Sister
Where born: Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England
- widow, labourer

Very odd ... but these are surely them in 1871 in St James Clerkenwell

James Warwick 61 - harp string maker
Elizabeth Warwick 62
Elizabeth Warwick 34 - daughter (1837)
Thomas Warwick 8
Charles Warwick 4

For Elizabeth, it says "married" but her surname is ditto-ed to father James.

I'm not making head nor tails of that one.

Births Sep 1862
WARWICK Thomas Arthur Clerkenwell 1b 539

Births Dec 1866
Warwick Charles W Clerkenwell 1b 637

Births Dec 1865
Hewitt Amelia Elizabeth Clerkenwell 1b 652

Just me musing. I should wait for Sidney Sr's birth cert I think.

And who knows, cousin Linda may know all of this and more!
(Linda (Edwin) does have Sydney Hewitt 1882 in her tree.)

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 21 Aug 2009 01:44

Just a bit of a search for Amelia, too - Sidney Sr's mum.
I think this must be her in 1871:

Name: Amelia E Hewitt
Age: 5
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1866
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: Thomas H
Mother's Name: Emily
Where born: Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England
Civil parish: Islington

Thomas H Hewitt 29 - smith & machinist, born Dover
Emily Hewitt 30 - born Essex (I think)
Amelia E Hewitt 5
Martha E M Hewitt 3
Alice Hewitt 1
Thomas H Hewitt 3 months

In 1881 she's a draper's assistant in St Mary Islington, as Hewett.

Sydney Charles Hewitt was registered in Holborn (St Luke is in Holborn dist). There are two possible Henrys in the same place:

Births Mar 1880
HEWITT Henry Thomas Holborn 1b 767

Births Dec 1880
HEWITT Henry Walter Holborn 1b 753

If the 1891 age is accurate, he would be the second one (if he was either of them; lots of Henrys).

Ann - I've found the thread you were talking about --

Would love to hear from anyone related to Sidney Charles Hewitt. He died in Singapore in 1942 but my mum remembers he had an older sister and that she had three children (her cousins). Please get in touch.

You might almost have won a prize for replying to the oldest message, there. ;) Back in that day, it wasn't possible to reply to messages on the boards, except by PM. So Linda, who wrote that, would never have looked for an answer there.

That's what Shirley explained in that thread (she just got confused by the names). Did you try that - click on the name of the person who posted that message? Notice will only reach that person if they still have the same email address as in 2003, or have updated it, unfortunately.

Oh! Googling SCH's name just found me the other thread your replied to, from 2008 --

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1047334

If you try a PM via that post, you might have more luck.

Heh. I've sent one for you, with the link to this thread. Just impatient. ;)

I deciphered the street name in 1901 for where Sidney was born. Actually, I asked Ancestry for streets in St Luke named ROH* in the 1881 census, which didn't work, so I tried RAH*. And it gave me: Rahere.

I had really hoped to find Amelia Hewitt there in 1881, a few months before Sydney was born. But no such luck.

There are two families, Roberts and Rodaway, and a couple of lodgers.

It will be interesting to see whether that is the address of the mother of Sydney Charles Hewitt born Q4 1881!

Ann - PM me your email address and I'll send you the census image for 1891 Sidney Hewitt - others if you like. I can send you up to 3 directly from Ancestry (then you can save the images to your own computer), or more if I save them first and then send them.

Got your PM, Ann - just to let all know, Ann does have busy stressful days, so whenever you get back, Ann, just have another browse.

1901

Civil parish: St Albans
County/Island: Hertfordshire

Hannah Myers 43 - widow, laundry maid - born Harpenden
Annie Myers 22 - born Whitechapel - this will be Hannah from the 1881
Martha Myers 20 - born Marseilles, France!
Walter Myers 18 - born Paris, France!
Willie Myers 13 - born St Albans - brother name not known ;)
Laura Myers 11 - born St Albans

Ellen herself seems to have departed the nest.

So ... maybe not Jewish, but European. ;)

I expect that MYERS is an anglicization, and MEYER was probably the original. Or MEIER.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 20 Aug 2009 21:50

Ancestry - the great goddess and great satan of sites. ;)

Ancestry is even getting a little better at its fuzzy searches. I think searching for Meyer* got me that Myers.

(The problem is that you can only use wild cards after the first 3 letters.)

I've been looking for more for both M(e)yer(s) and Onslow/Hewitt but having no luck with either.

And I have to run ... some may recognize this excuse: I am going to have a cat euthanized. The third one in 5 weeks. This is so bizarre I have begun to wonder whether someone in the new monster houses on the block has decided they don't like living in the middle of a feral colony (the rest of us feed them) and is doing something about it ... but more likely some infectious disease. This is my 13-yr-old girl cat and the last of the crew (which had peaked at 5 about 8 years ago) -- and all have since died of the exact same thing, an unknown wasting disease. Buck me up ...

Ann Report 20 Aug 2009 21:33

Janey, you are a genius, don't know what site you are using, but I couldn't find Peter Meyers on GR census. Likewise can't find Sidney senior on the two census returns(mentioned in replies to original enquiry) on GR census. It's unfortunate because the 1891 also mentions a Henry Hewitt age 10, which is probably Sidney senior's older brother, known as Harry. As for Hannah and Peter Meyers, the child Hannah age 1, is not known of, my grandmother
Ellen Augusta was the eldest (born 1884) then Martha, Walter, another brother name not known and Laura who was born very much later than the others. I know I am new to all this (& PC) but have tried other sites, which one did you and the others find all the info?
Ever grateful, Ann
