Many, many thanks for all your hard work.abscence from message due to two days of hospital visits with sister. Will apply for birth cert. for Sidney Hewitt - Seniorborn 1882 @ St.Lukes,Holborn 1b775.
Information for Sidney junior now complete.
Re Sidney senior's wife Ellen Augusta Meyers, I have her birth cert. and her parents marriage cert.- 14th April 1879,Parish Church of Harpenden,Herts. Groom - Peter Meyers-'full age'-boot & shoe finisher-residence Harpenden - father-Henry Meyers-Traveller. Bride - Hannah Bunyan-'minor'-no profession- residence-Harpenden-father-James Bunyan-Labourer.Witnesses-Mother- Hannah Bunyan and elder brother William Bunyan Just to complicate matters the bride Hannah was known in later life as Emma.
Have managed to trace the Bunyan family back to 1829, but Peter Meyers, like Sidney Hewitt is proving somewhat elusive. To answer an earlier question to the best of my knowledge neither of the families had Jewish connections.
Once again many thanks for all your hard work.
Information on my mother-Ellen Amelia Hewitt is complete.

I think so.

Births Sep 1897
Onslow Frederick Hewitt L Brighton 2b 208

JaneyCanuck Report 18 Aug 2009 23:22

This is Mr Onslow - in 1891, coffee house keeper, born Chester -

Births Mar 1857
Onslow Frederick Patrick G.Boughton 8a 342

But he doesn't seem to have married.

Note his wife's name: Amelia.

Is she the Hewit boys' mother?

If that is your man, he doesn't want to be found with parents in censuses.

This looks like him in 1891:

Name: Sidney Hewit
Age: 9
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1882
Relation: Visitor
Where born: London, England

Civil parish: St Luke
Registration district: Holborn

Frederick P Colar 34 - surname is ONSLOW
Archie Colar 26 - given name is AMELIA, sigh
Annie Chance 17 - servants
Huggie Chance 18
George Riches 15
Lizzie Davey 25
Henry Bollatch 23 - lodgers
James Saffell 20
Arnold Martin 19
Henry Hewit 10 - visitors
Sidney Hewit 9

Huggie Chance, that's one for the files. It's Maggie.

Hmmmmm!

Sidney Sr was born about 1882 - died 1961 at 79. ;)

Also, I am really really sure that living children were not registered as "male" or "female". That was the practice when a child had died before the birth was registered, and had not been given a name/baptised.

-- edit -- lancashireann corrects me, from personal knowledge, and I stand corrected! I would just say it is *quite rare* for children to be registered without a given name. ;)

... I'd been looking for marriages with a "y", but not for the birth.

Births Dec 1881
HEWITT Sydney Charles Holborn 1b 775

I think that's pretty probably him.

And I'd guess him in 1901:

Name: Sidney Hewett
Age: 20
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1881
Relation: Servant
Gender: Male
Where born: Rohus St Lukes
- actually, it's the actual address where he was born!
42 ? Street, St Lukes - I really can't read the street name; anybody?

Civil parish: Islington
County/Island: London

Occupation: News agent's assistant
Registration district: Islington

You haven't named Ellen's parents and I haven't had much luck spotting them in the census - but is there any chance they were Jewish? Meyers and Ellen are both common names in the Jewish community in the censuses.

If so, I'm wondering whether Sidney had a name change himself, if perhaps he was Jewish. Yes, clutching at straws, here. ;)

AnnAnnAnn - ya gotta reply in the thread, not by private message! I'm going to copy your PM here for the info of anyone who can help, this time.

janey, apologies, having stressful time here, trying to do two things at once.

Grandmother Ellen Augusta should be right name but I understand her mother who couldn't read or write registered her birth, I suppose the registrar took a wild guess, the death cert.shows Augusta.

Sidney Senior shown in 1911 census living at 82,Windsor St Islington, with Ellen Augusta and baby - Ellen Amelia.

Never knew Sidney junior as he died before I was born,am relying on information remembered by elderly sister age 79!

Saw two older messages posted requiring info on Sidney jnr. sister's family, replied about a month ago but no response as yet. Once again many apologies for "kibbs up" Ann

I don't see any messages about Ellen Amelia Hewitt, on a search. Did you try clicking on the poster's name and sending a message directly? If the person still has the same email address, they'll get a notice of that from GR. No notice of replies in threads is sent.

Sidney Jr's CSGC death record, for info - no family members named.

Ann deleted the other thread.

Herewith what I had just posted.

Well, maybe the birth cert says AUGUSTA, but the GRO index doesn't.

Births Sep 1884
Meyers Ellen Agusto St. Alban's 3a 503

No Sidney C Hewitt was registered in 1916.

No Sidney with mother Meyers was registered in 1916.

There really are some name problems somewhere.

Births Mar 1917
Hewitt Sidney C MYERS Islington 1b 434

My conclusion is that Sidney was already married (possibly in the military at the time?) and he and Ellen did not marry.

Marriages Sep 1904
Hewitt Sidney Charles Farnham 2a 251
Quint Mabel Jessie Farnham 2a 251
Redwood Beatrice Alice Farnham 2a 251
Warren Thomas George Farnham 2a 251

But I conclude wrong. ;)

In 1911, that Sidney is in Farnham with wife Beatrice Alice. Or so the census says!
