Victoria Report 29 Aug 2009 23:05

Hi
I know i have asked for alot of help in this but i am having no luck in finding my great grandfather Arthur Freeman. I just dont know where to look any more.
here is all the info i have, any help would be really appreciated.
He married my great grandmother, Marry Ann Walsh in 1922 in Liverpool. On their marriage certificate it said his fathers name was Harry Freeman and his occupation was a music teacher, which supprised everyone as we always thought they were a farming family.
We believe he was born in Bradford in 1890ish and everyone said he had a very strong yorkshire accent.
He ran away from home due to being accused of stealing money whe it was actually his brother, or something along these lines. He fought in the Somme where he was badly gassed. He also worked on the ships. We have his log books which start in New York on 18th Feb (his birthday) 1913 but we have no idea how he got to New York.
We just know nothing about his familyor what he was doing between these small bits of his life we have.
any help would be so appriciated.
thanks

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 29 Aug 2009 23:40

A mariner is someone who went to sea - a sailor.

thank you. I thought it would have been something like this. This seems to be very common for young men to do, especially when wanting to leav home ect. I just dont understand why my grand father started in New York. Could he have stowed away? Would there be anyway of finding this out?? x

KathleenBell Report 29 Aug 2009 23:45

This is the nearest birth to Bradford I can find:-

Name: Arthur Freeman
Year of Registration: 1890
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Great Ouseburn
County: Yorkshire - North Riding, Yorkshire - West Riding
Volume: 9a
Page: 89

You have 6 weeks to register a birth, so a birth in February could be registered in the April/May/June qtr.

On the image for the 1891 census that RamblingRose has given, Laura's surname is actually Freeman and not Waddington.

Could she be Arthur's mother (she is described as single on the census). Could Arthur have "made up" a father's name on his marriage certificate to hide illegitimacy?

why would they be living with people with differant names?? family?? and the father is missing too??? hmmmm.......

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 29 Aug 2009 23:57

Laura is described as daughter on this census. Perhaps her mother was called Freeman and then married again to Mr. Waddington.

ah, i think i have looked at these before, and i think Laura changes her name too, at a later date. Is there anyway of finding out what happened to Laura, if she left home with her child ect, or married??

There are quite a few marriages for the name Laura Freeman - too many to be certain if one of them was this one.

I saw freewheel's post about the other thread and wasn't sure I wanted to spend time ... but it's late, I was bored ...

Victoria, I think you aren't understanding.

Laura was the daughter of Alice Freeman who was not married when Laura was born. Alice subsequently married Waddington.

1871

Name: Laura Freeman
Age: 2 months
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1871
Relation: Granddaughter
Where born: Hopperton, Yorkshire, England

Civil parish: Allerton Mauleverer With Hopperton
Town: Hopperton
County/Island: Yorkshire

Joseph Freeman 47
Ann Freeman 44
> Alice Freeman 21 - Laura's mother
John Freeman 12
Joseph Freeman 10
George Freeman 7
James Freeman 4
> Laura Freeman 2 months

Laura wasn't married when Arthur was born.

Harry Freeman the music teacher was a complete fabrication, in at least some respects.

Obviously, his name - Freeman - was a fabrication. But he might well have been named Harry!

In 1891, just after Arthur's birth, there are two Harrys in Allerton Mauleverer With Hopperton who are of the rightish age.

One, Harry Goody, 21, born in Oxfordshire, is a groom in the household of Alfred Lord Mowbray & Stourton.

In 1891, Laura's father is a Wood-Man. Laura herself is a General/Domestic servant.

They are on the same census page (5) as other employees on the estate, which is on the immediately preceding page (4).

Harry Webster, 22, born in Allerton, a farm servant living with his uncle, a farmer, is on page 8.

If I were guessing, I might think one of those Harrys was Arthur's father.

There seems to be confusion about Arthur's age.

You should keep to one thread about the same people Victoria.
