Trying to find out where Alice went to live when she left Wales. She left home in her late teens I think & moved to the north of England-Newcastle/Durham/Hutton-le-hole area. Sometime before 1920 she moved to Hull with her daughter, also called Alice ,who was born in 1916, and who was my Mum.

Hi Janet, This is a bit of a puzzle.
It was my Aunt, who I spoke to today, who said her mum Alice (Hawksley )was born in Wales & she died in the early 1940's aged about 50. I think her father was called William, he was a mariner who died at sea (Can't find any records though). Alices' mother died quite young, soon after giving birth-don't know any details! When her father re-married Alice decided to leave home & apparently she moved up north. That's when things get a bit vague- she had my Mum (also called Alice) in Sept 1916, but Mum never had a birth certificate. I think this is because of the confusion with her surname, as Alice Hawksley married more than once. She came to Hull with my Mum & married Robert Clayton, and had a son Charles in 1920. Robert Clayton died & she then married Albert Clipson and had a daughter Anne.. My brother said there was some sort of scandal when she became pregnant with my Mum in early 1916 & that she was living in Durham/Newcastle area, and that the father may have been called DIXON. a young man who died in France in WWI aged only 18 years.
I would love to find my Mums birth certificate, but don't know for certain who her father was. The name WARD has also been mentioned.

My Mum always said her maiden name was Clayton. Her brother (Charles Wilson Clayton) was born in March 1920. His father Robert Clayton died around 1921, I don't know if he officially adopted Mum or if she was brought up to think he was her Dad. My Aunt Anne was born in Aug 1922 & her father was Albert Clipson, it looks like she was pregnant when they married. ( I can remember Grandad Clipson). It seems strange that Alice used the name Dixon when she married Albert. Had she taken the name of her first love/husband who was the real father of my Mum??

I would start with buying the Clipson marriage cert to see what it says on it.

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Sep 2009 00:04

Then the birth of Charles W Clayton I found with mothers maiden name of ward is your uncles?

SandyB Report 6 Sep 2009 00:10

I think my brother may have the marriage certificate in his loft somewhere!
I'll ask him tomorrow, although he's done more research than me & said he's drawn a blank too? No idea were WARD comes in?

My Uncle Charlie has always been known as Charles Clayton & my Aunt was called Anne Clipson. Wonder if there's another marriage to a Mr Ward somewhere. If there is my Grandmother was a very busy lady!

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Sep 2009 00:17

I think that to have any chance of solving this you will need some of those certificates.
Annies?may be dodgy that one as she is still with us and may get upset about things being searched for.
Charles?
The Clipson marriage .
Roberts death to see who the informant is.

I will have another look at things tomorrow and hopefully Janet will be back with some ideas.

I am going to edit out annies birth ref as she is still alive ,but if you want it again you can get it from,,,freebmd,,

SandyB Report 6 Sep 2009 00:18

I wonder if in the name 'Clayton Robert W ' if the 'W' stands for Ward? or it may be Wilson same as Uncle Charlie?

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Sep 2009 00:23

Why would Annie tell you that her mother was Hawksley when she has her mothers maiden name of Clayton on her own birth cert?

SandyB

SandyB Report 6 Sep 2009 00:23

Thanks for all the help. Have found out more tonight than all my previous research into Mums side.
Aunt Nan(Anne) & Uncle Charlie are both still alive & in their late 80's. Neither will mind me asking questions, but I don't think their mother talked much about her past, they just heard snippets of conversation. I'll phone & ask her if the name WARD rings a bell.

Do please come back with an update on what they say, this is interesting!

SandyB Report 6 Sep 2009 00:27

I don't think my Aunt has really thought it through. She just accepted that Clayton was on her birth certificate because this had been her mothers previous name. Ther's been no consistency at all.

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Sep 2009 00:38

I have to go now but I will be back tomorrow ,in and out,to see if you have any news from them.
A look at both their birth certs would maybe help.
Maiden name of Ward for one and Clayton for the other???

So where does Hawksley come from?

Hmmm food for thought.

Re-cap

Marriage to Albert Clipson as Alice DIXON.(1922)
Annie has mothers maiden name of CLAYTON.(1922)
Charles has mothers maiden name of WARD.(1920)

A Robert W Clayton died in 1921 aged 5,IF its the correct one and not just a figment of Alices vivid imagination, but it is in the right place and time for your knowledge..

And a birth in 1884 in Scucoates reg district for Alice Hawksley, who,s name is given by Annie, but where did she get that from?

All this happened in the reg district of Sculcoates

A possible birth for Robert
Births Sep 1862
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLAYTON Robert William Glanford B 7a 585

The district Glanford B is an alternative name for Glanford Brigg and it is in the county of Lincolnshire; information about it can be found here.

Do you know your mothers date of birth in 1916,and where exactly she was born?
