Never thought of looking for Johnstone, although it does appear further down the tree. It seems to be a mis-spelling in the census but it looks like them. That must be the first Emily {Nethercott}.
Well done Ozibird, don`t know if you`ve seen my new messages,it does take some unravelling. wonder if the second emily is also Johnstone?

Forgot to add;
Birth Cert of my grandfather shows;
John Charles Johnston.
Born 8th May 1889 at 2 Derby Road,Hackney,London to
Charles Hodges Johnston and Emily Johnston nee Nethercott.Father a Journeyman Farrier.
registered by E Johnston Mother 2 Derby Road on 18th June 1889 .
It`s these parents marriage that is a mystery as is the Hooker/Lusby scenario.
I have a copy of the birth cert of Thomas Alfred Johnston born14th February 1902 at 64 Blomfield Street, Dalston,Hackney,London.
His parents are Charles Hodges Johnston and Emily Johnston nee HOOKER.Registered 2nd April 1902.
so did Charles marry twice,or did they just put that on the cert for decency?

Margaret Ann Report 8 Sep 2009 21:53

This is taken from a family member who has looked it up but not given any census dates apart from;CHJ in 1881 census shown as single living with parents working as a Journeyman Farrier. Birth cert of Emily Nethercott 29th Sept 1869at 61 Squirries Street, Bethnal Green, father William Nethercott, mother Caroline Nethercott nee Lyons. 1871 census shows Caroline a widow with 4 children,Mary ann, Sophia Alice, Sarah Jane and Emily still at above address. The birth cert of Mary Ann shows same parents as Emily.
William died c1870 age 44. Living at the same address is a Henry Hooker. We don`t know if Henry was related to Emily Hooker.
In 1861 census the name of Williams wife is shown as Katherine Lusby aged 30 there are some alterations to change it to Caroline.
In 1847 there are marriages in Shoreditch Q1 Vol 2 Page 330 are names of Caroline Lyons and James Lusby. We don`t have the cert but it seems they married each other.
It all seems a muddle, can anyone unravel it.,but it still doesn`t tell us it Charles and Emily were married.

"What we`ve also discovered is that Charles seems to have married a second time to a Emily Hooker who was born in Kent somewhere around 1885/6"

MA ... Charles died in 1907. Emily Hooker could not have married until after 1901. Certainly not in 1892-4.

Can you *please* explain how you have discovered these things?

None of this is making any sense at all!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Sep 2009 21:38

The son?

Births Jun 1889
Johnston John Charles Hackney 1b 502

So, I don't see them in 1891 at all. Any tips?

... and no better luck in 1901.

Can you copy some census info, or give some clues about how to find them?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Sep 2009 21:29

Margaret Ann, can you clarify?

"It appears that a Emily Hooker married Charles between 1892-4 and lived in Hackney."

It appears -- from a child's birth certificate?

Ditto for Nethercott -- the name is from a child's birth certificate?

In both cases, there is no actual evidence of a marriage?

It would have been helpful if you had posted some census details for us, as I'm having trouble conceptualizing this. Let me see whether I can hunt some up ...

Margaret Ann Report 8 Sep 2009 21:25

Hi ,
I did put a message on earlier but it doesn`t show, so doing it again.

Charles Hodges Johnston and EmilyJohnston nee Nethercott are names on my grandfather`s[John Charles Johnston]
birth cert born 8th May 1889 at 2 Derby road, Hackney London.
It appears that a Emily Hooker married Charles between 1892-4 and lived in Hackney.
Their children are John,Charles,Robert,Thomas and Sophia.
If the first marriage produced a John I`m puzzled as to the second John in the second marriage, unless that`s my grandfather brought up by Emily Hooker.
All a puzzle ,if any one can unravel it I would be most grateful.

And where is this second Emily marriage??

I don't see that one either!

Are both Emilys' names coming from children's birth certificates?

Sounds like he wasn't actually married to either of 'em ...

Margaret Ann Report 8 Sep 2009 19:46

Hi Folks,
The dates for Charles Hodges Johnston and Emily Nethercott are same as we`ve found, also Charles` death is right [they were my gt.grandparents] but like you we`ve not found a marriage for them.
What we`ve also discovered is that Charles seems to have married a second time to a Emily Hooker who was born in Kent somewhere around 1885/6. It`s also thought he married the second Emily and had five children, and lived in London.
We are now getting totally confused by it all , so any help to sort it out would be great.
Many thanks to you all for taking the time to help so far,.

Redemption, Ozibird. ;)

And from the other end of both axes, Emily in 1871 in Bethnal Green:

Caroline Nethercott 44
Mary Ann Nethercott 11
Sophia Nethercott 5
Sarah Nethercott 3
Emely Nethercott 2

There are possible remarriages for Caroline ... Emily could have married under a stepfather's surname?

A little more info please! Where was the birth, and how do you know the approx birthdates? A census?

It looks like the index for J, Jun 1877 is missing.
