Andrew,
If the death record in Middlesbrough is correct:-
Charles Rhodes
age 68
Middlesbro
June quarter,,1950
1b 674.
then he can't have been born in 1890.

If I were you I think I would buy a copy of the death cert. in case it can give you any other clues, or, if he was buried, maybe his tomb stone has his parents names inscribed on it. If you don't know where he is buried, burial info is kept at Middlesbrough Crematorium and if you contact them they will find a grave for you.
I'm leaving today for ten days so won't be on line for a while but I'll check back in when I get back to see if you have gotten any further.

So, if that's who he was living with in 1911, then the 1891 census I found is the correct one.......:-

James Rhodes 51 born: Wardleworth, Lancashire
Julia Rhodes 43 born: Douglas, Isle of Man, Isle of Man

<<<Henry Rhodes 17 born: Smallbridge, Lancashire
<<<John James Rhodes 16 born: Smallbridge, Lancashire
Sam Rhodes 14 born: Whitworth, Lancashire
<<<Charles Rhodes 10
Alice Rhodes 7 born: Whitworth, Lancashire
Ruth Rhodes 2 born: Whitworth, Lancashire

so parents would be James and Julia!

There are 3 main series of army records - the medal cards (most everyone got a service or campaign medal), the pension records, and the service records.

The last is the most interesting, but 70% got destroyed during WW2. Ancestry will/has indexed and digitized these - but they've only done A-N. Maybe you should periodically try looking up Rhodes (all the Rhodes there currently are corrected spelling types), and maybe post a lookup request when Ancestry've gotten there.

Haven't been ignoring you Andrew but had to sign off to get to bed.

Don't forget the British were an empire and needed the army to keep order in all the commonwealth countries and lots of men joined the army if they couldn't find work too.
Britain was actually at war at the time, the Boer War started in 1899 and finished in 1902 so maybe he signed up for that ?
If the army was his career then he could have service records for the First World War. Ancestry have some records of service records so I'll take a look and see if I can find anything and Find My Past have records, but that's pay to view.

I am a bit confused why he was in the army then as there was no war going on is there a way I find out mor about him and his regiment ??

Andrew

Andrew Report 8 Sep 2009 23:56

Hi Catherine is there a place I can check out about the army link ?

Andrew

Andrew Report 8 Sep 2009 23:30

Hi Catherine

That is fasinating what you just brought up !!!

I wonder if it is the same 1 ( even though the birthdate is a 2 years out) maybe ???

Andrew

Andrew Report 8 Sep 2009 23:27

Hiya

Ok I have made a note of all this what I can tell is there seems be 2 (Charles Rhodes) born 1882 or either 1883 this would make both these dates ideal for my grandfather who died in 1950 so would make him about 68/69 years

I do think Bury and Whitworth is the place ( Aint it famous for brown sugar)

I like the idea also I have history of army here I must check out more on this !!!

Thankyou for all your help shame I still can not find a connection on cricket !!!

Many Kind Regards Andy

Just tried another 1911 search:-
First names CHARLES
Last names RHODES
Birth Place WHITWORTH

and only one came up again
HOUSEHOLD RHODES CHARLES M 1882 29 Rochdale Lancashire

and correct age so could be worth a look!

Catherine

Catherine Report 8 Sep 2009 23:11

No not in this case. He was in Barracks and is clearly stated as a Private in the Army Infantry.

The 1911 census may not be him but could just be worth keeping on file.

Andrew

Andrew Report 8 Sep 2009 23:10

I reckon this Bury (Whitworth) is the correct area this is so exciting :--)

Andrew

Andrew Report 8 Sep 2009 23:06

British Phone Books, on ancestry, have a
W. Rhodes , Btcher 603 Market St. Whitworth (which is just near Bury)
He is listed from at least 1929 to 1961 - didn't check any further.
Could this be his family?

(I am not sure hun I am so confused now lol)

1911 search:-
First names CHARLES
Last names RHODES
Birth Year 1882
Birth Year +/- 1 years
Birth Place LANCASHIRE

only showed one:-
HOUSEHOLD RHODES CHARLES WILLIAM M 1883 28 Oldham Lancashire

living in same household:-
HOUSEHOLD RHODES EMMA F 1907 4 Oldham Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD RHODES MARY ANN F 1882 29 Oldham Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD RHODES WILLIAM M 1908 3 Oldham Lancashire

Andrew

Andrew Report 8 Sep 2009 23:04

Civil parish: Bury

Condition as to marriage:
