Roy, I think you have the clincher in the marriage record Viv posted for Alfred "Rabbib" and Gertrude Bartlett. (If you want to push your luck, you can get her to view that image -- the original images can be viewed at Ancestry, and Ontario marriage records contain the spouses' ages, places of birth and parents' names.)

Father Name: John Rabbib
Mother Name: Elizabeth Duffin

That's from the Ontario marriage record.

The parents of John William and Alfred Frederick, per the English marriage record I posted, were John Rabbit and Elizabeth Duffin, as I posted on page 2 - 1856 Birmingham.

As we say in the Latin biz: quod erat demonstratum.

The thing we wanted to prove. ;)

They do say that if you want a job done well

Get a woman to do it,

Happy hunting.

Hi Janey , Vivienne , Rose & Somerset Girl.

Many thanks for this extra information.

It certainly suggests to me that Ada + John William Rabbit settled in Canada after joining Alfred Frederick Rabbit & his family.

I have also noticed that two of Alfred's children share the names of Alfred + John's siblings ( Agnes + Albert ).

.Possible coincidence of course, but i think it puts beyond doubt that these are the correct Rabbit family ( although Alfred seems to have "lost" five years from his age , having been born in 1870 ! ).

As for John Rabbit becoming William Rabbit i shall assume that he was known as William because his father was also John Rabbit,so i have no worries with the name change.

So i would just like to say again a big thankyou to everyone who has added new info. today.

( I have just discovered this new added info. after spending the last hour researching background on the Rabbit family ) .

Regards

Roy

So you want the Ontario marriage details?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 27 Sep 2009 19:35

Roy, if you want to see the 1911, they are under Rabbit, I was just searching for John, I guess!

Rabbit Alfred M Head M Oct 1873 37
Rabbit Gertrude F Wife M Jan 1883 28
Rabbit John M Son S Jun 1907 3
Rabbit Agnes F Daughter S Aug 1910 9/12
Bartlett Frederick M Father-in-law W Apr 1838 73
Rabbit William M Brother M Jan 1875 36
Rabbit Ada F Sister-in-law M May 1876 35

http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/index.jsp

search in Ontario for Rabbit and that household is the only result. You can click on the page number (48) and then on "split view" to see the actual image -- which will be a crappy copy of an almost illegible original, if it's true to form. ;)

SomersetGirl - I know! I seldom read a thread once it's got past two pages; my eyes boggle and my brain says 'stop!' ;)

I had those already on the previous page. ;)

I think they got discounted. ?

Note - date of immigration in 1911 Cdn census is 1910.

Good one, Rose, I agree with you. I was on my way home and had tried automatedgenealogy but not Ancestry -- AG doesn't allow for fuzzy searches or non-surname searches so missed the "B" mistranscription.

Checked Ontario white pages and there are two current Rabbitt listings, not close to Hamilton, but there would have been mobility in a century. And a Rabbit listing in the Toronto area, with others in northern Ontario.

Here's the Ontario marriage -- I can't get details:

Gertrude Ethel Bartlett
year date
Alfred F Rabbib
Wentworth County (correct for Hamilton)

The record/image should give both of Alfred's parents' names.

Parents' marriage (John and Elizabeth aged 45 on 1881 census):

Marriages Sep 1856
DUFFIN Elizabeth Birmingham 6d 142
RABBIT John Birmingham 6d 142

for checking Ontario marriage.

I think this is your John going by his middle name. He did have an older brother called Alfred Frederick born 1870.

Unfortunately Cdn records aren't available for the period needed.

Thought I'd check the Ontario deaths to 1934 and marriages to 1924, but nothing there.

Just thought I would report that when I searched for marriages for surname RABB*T, I for some reason got a result (spouse not rabb*t) for a bride named Ellen Furry.

Ancestry being cute? ;)

Janey & Vivienne

Thankyou both very much for your help with this tonight--it is very much appreciated.

It certainly seems to suggest that the Rabbit's went to Canada & hopefully made a good life for themselves there.

Regards

Roy

So why isn't FMP telling YOU "Year of departure must be numeric"?

I'm just a non-paying freeloader, I guess.

I did check the 1911 Canadian census. No joy. And no deaths in NSW.

Oh, another leapfrog post. Congrats. Who's with her??
