Whew! Thanks for all that, especially the summary Ozi - that helped my spinning grey cells.

Sylvia - several of the next generation emigrated to Canada but I hadn't thought of that with this line I must admit.

Glitter, thank you, I think you're right about the name.

Am now going to try and piece this together.

No wonder no one is following them up on Ancestry - too flippin' complicated!

Thank you friends. (ps. may be getting Ancestry as my Christmas pressie from OH - will I ever cope?)

GOODWIN ROSIE MARY F 1905 6 Gravesend Kent

I wonder if this is Rosie
Births Sep 1904
GOODWIN Lottie Mary R Gravesend 2a 656

I can't find a Lottie in 1911.

Lewis is hiding. I just can't find him under any conditions.

Well, I can see that if I am going to get Ancestry, I'm going to have to get used to some peculiar translations.

I think Lewis is being a complete pain!!!

Many thanks.

Good morning Nicola. Thank you for that - unfortunately I don't have access to the 1901 so haven't a clue who is next door.

Mind you, there were so many of them that it really doesn't surprise me but would you be able to tell me who they were?

I have quite a lot of info on many of the Goodwins so I don't want to waste anyone's time, but it may be helpful in putting a few things into context.

Won't be back until this afternoon as I do a voluntary job on Tuesday mornings! Thanks again.

Thanks Ozi. Alpha was living next door to his parents it seems. Why would they call him Alpha for heaven's sake? I know about Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end.......but??? Maybe they were hoping for more children !!

Actually went away and did a bit of googling. It's Greek for ox!

Wonder if he was known as Alf the Ox??? lol

Poor chap.

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Nov 2009 00:59

well, the alpha male in wolves is the leader, the "head of the clan"

There is the alpha male and alpha female, who are in fact the breeding pair, then there might be 1 to 3 or 4 younger wolves who support the alpha couple, and help raise the young.

so maybe his parents expected him to be the leader. :))))

Oh yes, you mentioned that earlier didn't you?

Maybe he was known as Alf the Boss then!

I wonder if they intended to name the next one Beta and so on? Guess we will never know.

Mind you, as an only child, he really was the beginning and the end wasn't he?
