Lewis Report 2 Jan 2011 22:51

The Kensington and Chelsea District School/ Cottage Homes was in Fir Tree Road Banstead on the North Downs in Surrey. The London Metropolitan Archives hold many records for the children who resided at the school as well as some entry registers. Some children spent 15 years or more in the school. The local history group (Banstead History Research Group) published a 100-page book on the history of the school, in Dec 2010. Just search for 'BHRG' to find their website.

Choccy if he Samuel died in 1881 why was he named on my grandmothers birth cert in 1885?
Vera Sounds like the children were all sent to a home of sorts - how sad.
I can put Bessie in the picture now & search for where she spent her childhood.
Thankyou everybody for your contributions dont know why whoever it was deleted his info about Jessie's marriage though.

Barbara, if you give us the name, age and place of birth of the son in the 1891, we can look it up and post it here.

Potty

Potty Report 18 Nov 2009 16:17

By 1901 the girls could well be in service and not with the family.

What was the mother, Emily's, maiden name? Possible the girls are with their grandparents and have been mistranscribed.

Richard
I would if I knew how to do it. Sorry.
I am 99.9% sure that I have the correct parents as I have worked my way back from certs, I found Samuel & Emily on Ancestry in 1881 living with 5 children & yes he was a carpenter.
Then on 1901 census Emily was living with just 1 son & looks like she was a widow.
I have searched & doubled searched for Bessie but just cannot find her on any census .
Is there anything else that I need to tell you?

Sometimes inmates of institutions like workhouses were only listed by their initials.
