Hey all! I'm doing some research on behalf of a friend and have come across a small stumbling block!

I'm trying to find a birth entry for Walter Rigler.

According to his marriage certificate, he was born around 1885 and his father was George Nippard.

According to his WWI records, he was born in 1883.

He was from the Bournemouth area which around this time seems to have moved counties (Hampshire/Dorset), so have searched for both counties.

On the Census returns, he appears with his father, George Nippard and mother, Sarah Rigler. There are other children, both older and younger, and it seems unclear as to the whole set up of the family. George Nippard was previously married to Lidia/Lydia and I don't think he was married to Sarah afterwards...?

On one of the Census returns, Walter appears as 'Walter Nippard' so I have searched for this entry but...nope!

There are two 'Walter Riglers' born in the Bournemouth area around this time: Walter Rigler b 1884 (reg 1885) and Albert Walter Rigler b 1884. I've ordered both certs but neither turns up a Sarah Rigler or George Nippard as a parent.

Any ideas???

Hi Sally,

Yes, this is the family. On the 1881 census, Sarah appears as George's step daughter so I suppose it's possible he had children with her??

Or it could be that Walter just put George on his wedding cert as his father, as he was the 'father figure' even though be may have just been his 'step grandfather'?! Still doesn't solve the prob of no birth cert though!

And, Barbara, thanks but that's one of the two entries I've already seen. The parents of this Walter were Walter and Mary Jane Rigler (nee Miller), they appear on alternative census returns. Thanks though x

Potty Report 26 Nov 2009 11:56

Have Sarah and Ann been mis-transcribed in 1881, as Sarah is only 3?

In the 1861, George is living with a wife, Lidia and next door but one to a Rigler family but no Sarah there.

Staffslass

I did wonder that myself Potty, it also seems probable that there was a previous marriage as they are down as step daughter and grand daughter.

Could you give us ALL the details from Walter's marriage cert please - ages, addresses, names, fathers, occupations - when + where + witnesses.

Is this the marriage in 1910 to agnes?

The registration district for Kinson is Poole and there is this birth:

Births Dec 1883 (>99%)
Riglee Walter Poole 5a 256

Looking at the image the last two letters are very blurred but it could be Rigler. Worth a try?

Dea

Dea Report 26 Nov 2009 12:37

Just one or two points here while I am chasing this around?

Where does it actually state that Sarah Rigler is George's mother?

George married Lydia Emily Cailes in 1865 - She was still with him on 1911 Census!

Do you have the birth cert for the Albert Walter born in 1884? - If so, who were the parents on that one?

Kelly Report 26 Nov 2009 12:59

Ok, I'm getting very confused! Tis easily done! Here's the info I have on the background:

George Nippard: born Sept 1836, Christchurch. Parents Solomon and Jane Nippard.

Living with parents for census returns of 1841 and 1851, and his grandfather, William Nippard in 1861.

He married Lidia/Lydia Troke in 1870 and appear on census living with her in 1871.

Lydia died in 1878. From the birth listings, there are a few possible children but those that also appear on census are Martha (1872), Alice (1875) and Lydia (1878).

As far as I can tell, Lydia wasn't married to a Rigler, so don't really understand the 'step daughter' thing! BUT, can't find a birth for Lydia (1837/1838) - on the cusp of FreeBMD so can't say if she was born a Troke or been married before.

The only Sarah Rigler I can find was born 1861 in Portsea, Hants - which isn't a million miles away so a possibility. Maybe I ought to order the birth cert. Although, this doesn't answer the question who Walter's parents were or where his birth entry is!!!! Arghhhhhh!! Everyone seems to be illegitimate in this family!!!!

Dea

Dea Report 26 Nov 2009 13:01

There was a Lydia Troke marriage in 1870 but do you have the cert? - Do you know for a fact that this is the correct one?
