Could someone else look at Military recods on Ancestry for john Willis Thacker born 1896,just to confirm to Paul it says in 1916 when he enlisted he was unmarried.

I have found Thomas Thacker born Brownhill Staffs with Sarah Matilda nee Chapman born Pontsbury Staffs 1873 and all the brothers of John that you stated. They were born Wimblebury Staffs.

Also is it definate that it is John Willis Thacker or just John Thacker.

My two postings( which I have corrected and apologise for the confusion) for 1901 for Alice Turner were just "possibles" but as I said I think the daughter of Edwin and Emma is more likely since John and Alice named one of their sons Edwin.
To be sure , Paul you need to get the marriage cert for John and Alice (details of which have been posted) You can do this on line at the GRO but be sure to tick the box that asks if you have the ref no and quote it) It costs £7 The cert will then show her fathers name and occupation to help pinpoint her in 1901

Mary, I have looked at the WW! Service Record for John Willis Thacker (coal Miner) who enlisted in the 5th Batt South Staffs regiment 21/2/1916 aged 20..His address is given as 87 New ? Rawnsley Hednesford and next of kin is his father JWT senior
He definitely says NO to the question "Are you married?" although when his pension (originally 16/6d a week) was increased to 20/6d for 13 weeks it was to include child allowance from 1/10/1918
Regimental no was 49144 Private and under "Disability" it simply says VPH which could mean Very Poor Health
I cant actually see that he ever left this country

It looks as if Alice was alive and well up to 1970
Alice Thacker born 10/10/1893 died 1970 Mar Q Bucklow 10 a 550

Maryb and Gillian,
On his pension records-right at the bottom of the second or third page-doesn't that say wife-Mrs A Thacker-21 Old Buildings, etc?

Paul-the 1911 census details are from FMP.

Mary Report 27 Dec 2009 13:37

1911 census with JWT father 1866 and JWT 1896 there is Doris Louisa daughter married to John Blakemore born 1882 Walsall Wood Staffs

John W Thacker marries in 1916 to Ann/Annie Blakemore born 1883 to Simeon Blakemore born 1858 Bilston Staffs ans Selina Thacker 1858.

Paul has this Selina Thacker and Simeon Blakemore in his tree.

So is this the JWT with wife Ann on military records,in which case he wouldn't have been married on records as he married 1916.

Maryb

It seems as though the JWT marrying Alice Turner are the wrong ones and Paul should send for marriage certificates.

Edit
Selina 1858 had brother Thomas Charles Willam thacker 184 he married Hannah holt and had Thomas Charles william Thacker 1870 who married Sarah Matilda Chapman and had John 1896.

So all the families are related its just a matter of finding the correct person John Thacker 1896 married.

Maureen -I have beeen through the whole 13 pages again (twice!) and cant see the ref to wife but the images are all a bit blurred and indistinct -I viewed them on Ancestry -maybe you have a clearer view where you saw them
Dont think it matters much in terms of facts whether he lied on one sheet and told the truth on another

Sorry to appear thick but you answered that the 1911 census details were from FMP. What does FMP stand for as when I just enter FMP nothing comes up that makes sense

Thanks

All who responded to my subject "tracing a great uncle" were very helpful in their suggestions and information provided. The birth certificate was sent for and this confirmed that it was John Henry Thacker NOT John Willis who was in our tree. We believe he married in 1921 (Jan/Mch quarter 6b 1134) a lady with surname (maiden) Bate. Whilst we wait for marriage certificate to confirm, can anyone suggest if there is a best way to find any children. Bruce has suggested that we go through Rootsweb.
