1861 census for Rutland please

OK, so what I am thinking is this - when Samuel and Sarah married, was she a widow? Perhaps she had been married to the brother (was he Joseph), which is why you can't find a birth for her. Give me 5 again ... |

So I take it you don't have the marriage cert for Samuel and Sarah? That's the safest way to solve the mystery. |

So there she is just Sarah Staples, not E? Just remind me, where did the E come from? Was that only from the 1851 census? |

Aveyronnaise, I have just had another thought. Could you check out the 1861 census for Tixover Grange in Rutland to see if Sarah is there being a servant please. |

Aveyronnaise, I have just read your message and the E comes from my grandmother's birth certificate. It states mother Sarah Elizabeth formerly Staples. Another interesting point is my grandmother has two brothers. The eldest is Alfred SLATER and the other is Richard FRANCIS. |

As I see it, in order to progress accurately you have no option but to go ahead and order the marriage certificate for Samuel and Sarah. I would be interested to know whether her status is "widowed"! It's the only solution I can think of. On the 1911 census people's FULL names were supposed to be filled in and she has only put "Sarah" not "Sarah Elizabeth". |

Just read your last reply - well, I would be inclined to take those brothers' names as pretty hefty evidence!! Will check out the 1861 for Tixover Grange though. Back soon! |
