What is her father's occupation?

Was she born in Liddell Terrace and that's why you know that census is correct?

Ozibird Report 5 Jan 2010 21:08

No Margaret Jones in Jun reg quarter so I expect they registered her a couple of weeks after her birth. This would fall into Sept quarter.

Afterthought: Elizabeth Chambers is definitely recorded as her mum?

It looks like it. I'm not so sure about 1901. I can't find them on 1881, but they were married by then seemingly. I'm trying to track down Elizabeth through Joseph who is with them in 1891. There is this.

1881 England Census
Name: Joseph Chambers
Age: 16
Estimated birth year: abt 1865
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Thos.
Mother's Name: Sarah
Gender: Male
Where born: Jarrow, Northamptonshire, England (The county is an error due to collator's markings)
Civil parish: Hedworth Monkton and Jarrow
County/Island: Durham
Country: England
Street Address: 94 Ferry St

Occupation: Laborer
Registration district: South Shields
Sub-registration district: South Shields
ED, institution, or vessel: 16
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
Thos. Chambers 57
Sarah Chambers 49
William Chambers 23
Elzith. Chambers 19 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Hebburn
Joseph Chambers 16 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Mary Ann Chambers 9
Mary Chambers 19 - daughter-in-law
Thos. Chambers - grandson; 4 months
William Chambers - grandson; 3 months

Age for Elizabeth fits 1901 but not 1891. Of course Joseph may not be a brother, but a cousin or some other kind of relative.

This could be John's death which would make 1901 a greater possibility, but still totally confused about Margaret.

Deaths Mar 1898
Jones John 44 S. Shields 10a 441

What you need to do is get John & Elizabeth's marriage cert so you can find out John's father's name and occupation. Cross your fingers he wasn't a collier!

FMP have margaret as 8 on 1901,and after blowing up the image it is 8 and what looks like a 1 rubbed out in front of it,the domestic servant may be was put on the wrong line and should have been against Lily or Elizabeth.

Im thinking that is Elizabeth on 1881 census with brother Joseph and that she hasnt told anyone she is married?
She would have had to have permission to marry as she was under 21 and maybe it wasnt forthcoming?

All the family names are there.

But most definately the marriage cert is needed for this one.

Ozibird Report 5 Jan 2010 23:00

Yes, Viv. Looking at the image I can see the 1 in 18 is a bit fuzzy.

They don't make it easy for us, do they?

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 5 Jan 2010 23:11

They certainly dont Ozi.

But if it was too easy there would be no fun in it.

Madmeg Report 5 Jan 2010 23:20

ARe we now convinced that John Jones was born 1855 not 1865, and Elizabeth Chamber born 1857 not 1867? That would fit in which a marriage in 1880, and children born c 1884, 1888 and 1891.

I can't quite understand why people think that it is odd that Margaret is 8 in 1901, assuming the census record is wrong at ageing her as 18, but Lily seems to be the right age, at Liddell Terrace. It is Elizabeth, the mother who isn't right, aged 38 when she should be 44, that is quite a difference.

Then Marguerita says that Sara in 1891 should be 17, not 7, which would mean she was born in 1874, 6 years before a likely marriage of John Jones and Elizabeth Chambers. What is wrong with her being aged 7 in 1891?

I am in a bit of muddle over this family - is anyone else?

Marguerita

Marguerita Report 5 Jan 2010 23:37

sorry madmeg i dont know why i said sara was 17 in 1891 when indeed she was only 7, i think i meant the 1901 index.

Marguerita Report 5 Jan 2010 23:42

thanks to everyone for their help with this it is greatly appreciated. it does look like i will have to get the marriage cert for john jones and elizabeth chambers when the funds are available, lets just hope i have the right dates for that,. my only concern is that i cant find a john jones born in cardiff in 1855,(he states cardiff on grannys birth cert) and it looks like 1855 the year he was born, but will check other things at home as well, the only thing that has thrown me is the children born between marriage? and sarahs birth , we only ever knew of the 3 sisters. anyway thanks once again marguerita

many thanks mgnv, will look online first then when weather clears try the council itself.... have noticed a few anomilies with census reports for the family will double check info then list the definates. it does look like my great-grandmother listed herself as chambers and not jones on the 1881 census ,even though married. i know this is the correct listing i have been given as william chambers goes in another direction and becomes related on the other side of my family.???? many thanks again
