Many thanks to lancashireann for Jessie Dorning. A brilliant piece of lateral thinking!

I wish i had never heard of jessie Woollright, having spent the last hour or so trying to find her on the census and in bmd. Searches in Ancestry, lancashirebmd and lan-opc all suggest that the name must have been something else. I have tried Jessie on its own and have not found a family name anywhere near Woollright.

Tomorrow is a day off!

Apologies if I misinterpreted your posting - I read it as a request for the info to be found for you....................

another way of finding the right spouse is to use the site lancashirebmd.org.uk

they are not all transcribed but you can often be lucky and it states where exactly they married as well

eg
Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1899
WILLIAMSON Richard P
WOOLLRIGHT Jessie

Freewheel, I did not expect you to do so! The bmd record is there - with no name of spouse. Someone else has been kind enough to look for it. I should have displayed those on the same page! My thanks to Aveyronnaise.

I am sorry to have upset you, Freewheel. I am still learning 'the tricks of the trade' at the age of 80!

Sorry, Murray, but I'm not going to look for it for you - try searching freebmd yourself..........

My thanks to Freewheel for Gertrude Richardson. She was born in Hull, according to the 1911 census, whereas the other Richardson - Marion Renney, who married John Rawsthorne, was born in Liverpool.

Now the only maiden name we are missing is that of Jessie who married Richard Pierre.

You need to look at freebmd, and find out the surnames for all the wives whose first names you have listed.

It may be that the ones who married after about 1895 had children after 1911, in which case you can find them - also on freebmd - by inputting both surnames in the search boxes

Dea, Chris has sent me shots from the 1911 census that show Minnie living in Birkdale with her son Grenfell Roy, and her mother-in-law Harriet and brother-in-law Herbert. Minnie completed the census form. No Robert Grenfell, so presumably he was abroad. Perhaps he was also in the Merchant Marine? Showing her mother as mother-in-law is confusing!

I have moved on to trying to find descendants of the other second generation marriages - not much luck so far. John Rawsthorne had a son George born in Bebington in 1907. The 1911 census shows them living in Rock ferry, up the road towards Birkenhead.

Hi Murray,

So, Grenfell's parents were Robert + Minnie who were married in 1901 (after the census).

Hi again Murray,

Just curious ! - Was Grenfell's father a Mariner as was his grandfather?

It seems strange that he is not with Minnie on 1911 and I can't find him on 1901 although I have found Minnie on 1901, with her widowed mother and brother.

Hi Murray,

I have found a possible child from Grenfell's first marriage - It looks like this person may well still be alive so sending you the details by pm.

Hi Murray,

The site I used to use to do free searches for 1911 was:

http://www.1911census.co.uk/

I assume this link still works but if not let me know.

Just ask if you need anything more.

Dea, I am most grateful for the pointers to Lancashire websites. I have one question that you may find extraordinary - where do I go for free access to the 1911 census?!?

I am an Ancestry 'member', and made that my first port of call.

Good morning Murray,

I am now 'awake' and can see that your dates do in fact make sense (for some reason I just could not see it yesterday!).

Anyway, as well as the 1911 Census and FreeBMD, you may find these sites also very useful for that area.

Parish Records for Lancashire:
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html

Births, deaths + Marriages for Lancashire:
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/index.html

These 'local' sites often give more info e.g. mothers maiden name for births and wife's previous married name as well as maiden name if she has been previously married.

If it is 'living' relatives you want to find, I should start with the most recent marriages and look for children and 'their' marriages, then check the trees on here.

Ancestry site is good too if you want to search for children - do you have access? - If not, just ask on here.
