My grandmother should have had a different surname but her father took his grandfathers surname after he died and left the family some property.

Today i received the cert, hoping against hope that it would have the father named as William Fishlock. But no, the father is un-named and William jnr was born a year before his 'parents' marriage, in Chelsea workhouse...so it seems not 'entitled' to the name he bore and passed on to my grandmother and her siblings, that is that part of my tree turned to woodchips :(

Thanks Misty, I hope you get your 'proof' , I am still sat here looking at a photo of my gt gt grandfather and his 'son' trying to decide if they look sufficiently alike lol. Will add when I get some info,

Maggie I will , I do so many look ups for other people now, and it is so satisfying to find someone even if it's not 'your own' ...I found my mum's best friend a first cousin once removed last week...and acting as go between with photos etc.

Rose, I agree with Maggie, I would have to buy the cert....because I wouldnt be able to stop myself ( no will power !! )

I'm having the same problem with my Grandfather c 1858, now have about 15 certs, along with aprox 2yr of research and still cant find him....so I've decided the one I believe is him, is him....but I shall never stop looking for proof !!

I think I will either , have to go on the premise that William was Williams son just born before the marriage... lol that way I keep 2 years of research and a lifetime of knowing who my gt gt grandfather was ...

or go for the poss W Collins cert and see if it tells me anything ...

In other words , lol, by 1861 he was William Fishlock son of William and Ann.. but when he was born he might have been reg as William Collins , son of Ann only...

No William Fishlock is as below aged 3 in 1861... what I was trying to do was eliminate the William Collins born in 1857/58 by finding them on the census...there are only a few born in Chelsea at the right time...if found with parents I won't have to order the certs to check.

Now I'm confused ( not hard to do, by the way) if he was on 1861 census with Ann and William, as Fishlock, he wouldnt be on there as Collins as well......would he?

I have today got the marriage cert of William and Ann ...and a birth cert which I hoped might be William ( Edward) ... it is Edward Fishlock 's not right mum.... there are no births for William Fishlock...so though it is poss he just wasn't registered ... he might be a Collins ...
