Okay, there *is* a Margaret E J Ewen marriage in 1959 in Ilford, Essex. I will PM details.

And yes, there is a daughter to match, and the daughter's marriage to match. All details on their way.

"I need to know from the English records if Margaret's marriage or death is recorded, if so her married name and area would be helpful too."

Hm, it works the other way around. You need to know her married surname in order to find a death.

It is possible to search the England/Wales deaths index at Ancestry by given name(s) and exact date of birth, and sometimes a married surname can be surmised from a result. There are actually a dozen deaths for Margarets born 14 Aug 1933, none with your Margaret's middle name(s), but some with none. The index only goes to 2005.

I'm still not grasping the part about Gillian's married surname. Was her birth surname Ewen?

You mention some other posting. The only one I see with the name Gillian Mayes is this from 2003:

There are three people here at GR with Margaret Ewen born 1933 Aberdeen in their trees. You're in touch? Might the ones with ME born 1932 in Aberdeen be referring to the same person? It would be wise to put a tree of your own on this site, even if sketchy, including the names of the people you're looking for.

After what year* might "any marriage in England or Wales have taken place?

Thank you all for the rapid response - impressive! I have been able to rule out the South Africa theory as the dob for my Margaret Ewen is 14/8/1933. I need to know from the English records if Margaret's marriage or death is recorded, if so her married name and area would be helpful too. I know her daughter Gillian Mayes (I am assuming Gillian is using her married name and not her maiden name) has been searching for her mums family too on various sites but we're finding it difficult to make contact, maybe her email address has changed since the postings in 2001. We know from Scottish registry records that Margaret did not marry or die in Scotland

Heh heh, FBG, I was editing and you came up with the real stuff in the meantime. ;)

William Ewen doesn't seem to have been born in England/Wales, per the GRO index.

One question - you said

"she has a daughter called Gillian Mayes (presumably this would be Gillian's married name)"

Did you mean that would be Margaret's married name, Mayes?

Re the Margaret Ewen travelling to SA in 1958 - remember it is a fairly common name.

These people were travelling with her (searching for Ewen travelling to SA in 1958 *with* Margaret Ewen):

EWEN Mary 1904 1958 Southampton South Africa Cape
EWEN William 1937 1958 Southampton South Africa Cape

so she seems unlikely, and may have been a Ewen by marriage even.

Hello Elizabeth.

We have a member here who is an expert in Scottish records and has privileged access to them and he would be the very best person to ask for help with this.

If you go to this thread

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1199784

you can click on his name -- Tombul -- and send him a private message.

Or you can just use this link

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/contact.asp?wci=messagenew&contact_key=2476140

to go directly to a form for sending him a message.

If you give him the details of what you are looking for in Scottish records I'm sure he will do what he can to help. He's a rather busy person, so it might take him a few days. ;)

Good luck!

I am looking for help in locating Margaret Elsie Jane Christie Ewen, born in Aberdeen 1933, mother Helen Barbara Taylor Gordon, father Alexander Ewen. There is no record of Margaret's marriage or death in the Scottish records office but I know she has a daughter called Gillian Mayes (presumably this would be Gillian's married name). Can anyone help search for a marriage for either so I at least know if they are still in the UK? Unfortunately, I can see a Margaret Ewen going to South Africa in 1958 on the passenger listings. Any help very welcome. Liz
