Kirsten, exactly what do you want to know? And please don't say "anything". Are you trying to get further back than 1916?

I'm sorry, I was called away. I realize you may not answer this until tomorrow.

Does the newspaper say that they were in the Coldstream Guards? How much is actual fact?

Also, do you mean Yeoman Gaoler at the Tower of London?

Do you know of Trevor Buckland who has photos of WH Buckland as a Yeoman Warder & Yeoman Gaoler?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/32389133@N04/sets/72157615119267439/

I don't mean to have an inquisition. I'm just trying to get my head around things.

Have you found WH Buckland in the 1911 census?

BTW, WH Buckland served at the Tower of London for 24 years. I think 60 years must be a mistake, especially as Yeoman Warders have to have served in the forces for at least 22 years, and be non-commissioned officers which means they have to be in their late 30s, at least, when they join the Yeomanry.

Do you know if William H Buckland's father was called JACK or JOHN?

Do you know what the H stands for in William's name?

Are any actual dates, or ages of people, given in that newspaper article?

hi
i am so sorry ozi, i managed to read the newspaper article wrong regarding how long he served as a yeoman jailer

here is an except of the newspaper article

"The tower of london simply wont be the same again, even the strutting ravens will miss old bill, for bill buckland, yeoman jailer, is retiring,
bill's story really begins 60 years ago when the three yr old son of coldstream guardsman jack buckland played on the tower ramparts,
when bill grew up he too became a coldstreamer before joining the tower as a yeoman in 1935
now after service under four monarchs bill leaves his post on friday he is 63 and has controlled the towers 36 beefeaters for the past six years
he will climb out of the £100 uniform and march out instead of the blue door cottage on tower green where the ravens gather, he will have a home by the sea at thorpe bay.

bill at 6ft and 16 stone must also say goodbye to the towers chapel royal of st peter where three of his six children were married."

ive only written out part of the article as the rest is not relevent
ive tried speaking to my nan again as william was her father in law but unfortunately because of her age she doesnt remember a lot

thanks u everyone for ur help

the 1911 census shows only one WHB in London

HOUSEHOLD BUCKLAND WILLIAM H M 1891 20 Lambeth London

But as he was in the army he may not appear on census anyway?

kirstendeanne

kirstendeanne Report 27 Jan 2010 11:48

hi rambling rose
if william is unable to be found in the census because of the army would there be a record of his wife and their children in the census instead???

kirstendeanne , Hi am having a bit of trouble getting my head round possible birth dates...is there a date on the news paper article by any chance?

If WHB married Hannah in 1916 , the one below in 1911 might be the right one...

have you got any firm date of birth for him?

Rambling

Rambling Report 27 Jan 2010 12:00

what might be connected is this on 1911

MILITARY BUCKLAND JACK 1883 28 Overseas Military

I wonder if this might be William's brother? Jack's son?

kirstendeanne Report 27 Jan 2010 12:05

hi
i have no birthdate for william at all, all i know is who he was married to, the only other info i have is the names and birthdates of williams children and the name of williams father

im sorry it is not a lot

Rambling

Rambling Report 27 Jan 2010 12:16

I think kirstendeanne if Trevor gets back to you he may well have some more details, but in the meantime I would order the marriage cert of william and hannah...that may have a clue as to an address or maybe even a member of the family as witness.

There are possibles on the 1901 census but no 'Jack ' Buckland... one family does have a number of children with 'J' as middle initial so it could be that he used second name ...

kirstendeanne

kirstendeanne Report 27 Jan 2010 12:21

thank you
i think the best bet like you say is i will order the marriage cert of william and hannah and hopefully on there is williams fathers name or something that might give me a bit more of a clue

thanks for all your help
it is appreciated very much
