Thanks AOGG. I have seen the death record for Clara (first two of your replies) on LDS but it is, I believe a submitted record and I haven't seen anything concrete to back it up.

The third Clara was Edward's niece (Seth is Edward's brother).

Aveyronnaise Report 4 Feb 2010 13:36

Edward Oddy b 10 Apr 1836 to Jesse and Betty, in Pudsey, Yorkshire
m Ann born Overton, Wakefield, 1836

(I haven’t found a marriage for them, but assume from the fact that her unmarried sister Caroline Walker was staying with them at the time of the 1861 census, that Ann’s maiden name was Walker - in which case she is the daughter of Charles and Maria).

I have all I need BACKWARDS from here, plus a fair amount of detail about Edward’s life (he did very well in business as a cloth merchant, owned one of the smartest houses in town, but then went bankrupt, spent a couple of weeks in prison for assault, stood for election as a Conservative councillor etc. etc.) but I am scratching my head over his children!!

On 1871 census they have one child - Catherine (b 1862, Bramley, Yorkshire) at home with them in Bramley. I have no other record of Catherine. It looks most likely to me that she wasn’t their daughter at all - she isn’t baptised in the same place as their other children, nor educated with them, nor is she buried with her parents.

However, from www.calverley.info (local parish records site) I have baptisms for three further children, as follows:

Clara (18 Feb 1863, Bramley, Yorkshire)
Maude (6 May 1864, Bramley, Yorkshire)
Charles Albert Edward (3 Jan 1866, Bramley, Yorkshire) - this name is from local parish records, although FreeBMD has him down as Edward Charles Albert. At the time of his baptism in
Yorkshire, their abode is listed as “London” - which seems unlikely but not impossible.

For a long time I couldn’t find these three children on the 1871 census but eventually found them on Ancestry (mistranscribed as DOTY) at a boarding school in Headingley, Leeds. At this point the boy is listed as “Albert Edward”.

Parents Ann and Edward both died young (in 1874 and 1879 respectively).

I know what happened to Maude next - having trained as a milliner, she married Fearnley Bell and was eventually buried with her parents, her husband and her own children in Bramley.

BUT I cannot find either Clara or Charles/Albert/Edward on subsequent censuses. Anyone feel like taking on the challenge?

EDIT I should have said that there is a submitted record for Clara's death on LDS (see Ann of Green Gables posts below) but that I have seen nothing concrete to confirm that this is "our" Clara.
