Charles Sheldrick m Alice Sophia Saunders. Had one daughter Alice Emily Sheldrick in 1906. Alice Sophia died in childbirth and the daughter was taken in by Emily & William Bushell/Bushill. They all lived in Melbourne Road, East Ham, London. Emily was either born Saunders or Sheldrick. Always led to believe she was Charles' sister but have now found out she could have been Alice Sophia's sister(?) I can find no marriage certificate for Charles & Alice. Can anyone help as I have no dates of birth. Only information is that Charles was a lot older than her when they married. I would be grateful for anything. Thanks

I notice in the 1911 Census entry below that there is an Alice Saunders born 1907(?) which is more than likely my grandmother but don't understand why she is not down as a Sheldrick (or perhaps I do given the following).

I have no marriage certificate for Alice Sophia Saunders to Charles Sheldrick.

I have no death certificate for Alice Sophia Saunders(Sheldrick) either. We have always been told she died in childbirth but looking at the birth certificate of Alice Emily Sheldrick, Alice Sophia Sheldrick is down as the informant living at 112 Market Street, East Ham when the birth was registered on 30/5/1906(?).

Can anyone tell me:
1. Was Emily Bushell born a Saunders or a Sheldrick?
2. Was Emily Bushell - Charles John Sheldrick 's sister or was she Alice Sophia Saunders' sister?

A lot to take in, I know, but anything you could help me with would be great.

well, that marriage I posted above from the London records was for an Emily SHILDRICK and a William Bushell


and Freewheel found the freebmd reference ..... so you could also order the actual certificate


The "children" on the 1911 census are of an age to indicate a marriage about 1880



so that could be one answer to your problem.

Where WAS Emily Bushell born???


The 1881 says she was born in Tottenham, Middlesex,

The 1891 in Royston, Hertfordshire

and in 1901 she says she was born in Woodford Essex.

Could anyone find out who was living at 112 Market Street, East Ham at the time of Alice Emily Sheldrick's birth - 21st April 1906? It might shed some light as to what her parents' names were at that time!

Birth registered by the mother some weeks later according to Rosemary.

Taken in by family called Bushell.
Appears on 1911 census as Alice Emily Saunders.
One of Alice Emily's parents was related to Emily Bushell, being an aunt, either sister of Charles Sheldrick or Alice Saunders.

I think I've got it all.

Rosemary is creased with embarassment at having misunderstood the system, so I thought I would try to help her out. Might have made a pig's ear of it.

Not even sure what we need to find next!

Seems likely that Alice Emily's parents weren't married.

Her mother, Alice Sophia Saunders, may have died in childbirth with another child. There are these births:

It does say he is Thomas, but he's a bricklayer - and there is brother Charles.

It's been a while since I added to this thread but wondered if you could help me as I have another small piece of information. I was told that my great grandmother Alice Sophia Sheldrick (nee Saunders) entered a workhouse in order to have her daughter, Alice Emily Sheldrick. Apparently, she died soon after although she did register the birth some five weeks later. She was living in the East Ham, London area during this time. Can anyone access the workhouse records to find her please? I have no idea of the name of the workhouse, apologies!
