Emma, if you think that this is your George with his Mum check the original census on Scotlandspeople to see if Mary is single or widowed. Have you looked at the births for William and John? Do any of the births have an RCE (register of corrected entries)? If Mary was single she may have gone through the courts to prove paternity and this would be recorded on the left hand side of the birth entry at a later date. Have you traced the marriages and deaths etc. of William and John yet? Again their whereabouts could be useful in tracking down the correct death certificate for Mary.

Emma - my gran was named May after her Aunt Margery. Check out:
http://www.whatsinaname.net/

I don't have an Ancestry sub, so I can't see many census details, but I think this is your George:

1871
Mary Gray 40 Old Deer Head Old Machar
George Gray Mary 2m Aberdeen Son Old Machar

1881
Mary Gray 50 Old Deer Head Old Machar
George Gray Mary 10 Old Machar Son Old Machar

1891
Marjory Gray 62 Old Deer Head Old Machar
George Gray Marjory 20 Aberdeen Son Old Machar

1901
Marjory Gray 72 Old Deer Head city
George Gray Marjory 32 Aberdeen Son city
[city: parish=168 i.e., one of the Aberdeen parishes]

With her death pinned down considerably (but not her forename), maybe you can find a d.rego for her - fingers x'ed.

Emma

Can we assume that George Gray is your direct line please? Trying to trace the maternal grandparents of an illegitimate child can be tricky. Did George marry please? If he did what are all the details from his marriage certificate. Did he give a name and occupation for his father? Who were the witnesses? This can be useful as he may have had siblings or may have had a cousin from his Mum's side as a witness.

Even if Mary Gray died in Scotland it could be a long trawl to find her death certificate as it is not an uncommon name and if she didn't marry you have no approximate year of birth to work from. Also the only way you could be sure you had found the correct one would be if you could connect the informant's name, relationship and address to information you already have.

EDIT

If she didn't marry and you haven't found a death for her, how do you know that she was born 1830/1 please? Is she not your direct line but a sibling of your direct line? Sorry no that can't be - if she was a sibling you would know her parents' names.......

Hi Aileen, Yes have that info thank you also that Jane Ann Lamb
father was Charles Lamb and also father of Alexander. Williams
father was a William Lamb, Charles was a Farmer and William
a butcher. Have gone further back with the Lambs but ggrandfather
a different matter. My mother said he was born in America and
found that in 1891 census. I remember when my mum was alive
that someone from America came looking for Nerrlies, I know
that a sister (Lizzie) of my mums went to America and may have
been from her side, she died in California. Emma

Can I ask how you got back to your Mary Gray please? Death certificates in Scotland give the parents' names when the informant knew them.

Erin - it's an artifact of FreeCEN's transcription process. In 1851, Old Deer contained 5350 people, of whom 60 were Grays. FreeCEN has only transcribed a small piece of Old Deer, namely the piece that fell outside Aberdeenshire - it fell in a detached bit of Banff and had 603 people incl 9 Grays.
