My goodness, I can't believe so so many of you have been delving away!
Some if this I have already investigated - to a point - but now that you have raised the Q of Violet Scott Clark for example, I'll go back to that again.
Not sure where the Bowers come into it although I know about the Furness family in Ganton View prior to Violet going to work. I also know the name of the family she lodged with in Headingley (the Ounsworth family).
You've all given me much to reconsider; I am very grateful and will post back my further thoughts. Perhaps I will crack this one after all - with your help and advice.

Dea the text size had gone smaller so being short sited i have gone to next size up, it is better but don't get as much on screen in one go .

Problem is -- I don't think those Bowers *are* in the Furness household in 1911.

Artbeat posted the 1911 details and they aren't there.

And a search for Bower living with Furness, etc., doesn't turn them up.

Can choccy tell us how that 1911 list was compiled?

lol Dea , because i am dodging between freebmd ancestry and here i only saw the second bit of 1911 ...I have changed my font size to much larger because of the GR change and have to keep scrolling :)

just out of interest the other name on that 1911 Joshua Peel down as 'brother' might be worth looking into ? whose brother? could he be the childrens father ??

I would certainly get those birth certificates.

My hunch would be that Violet's parents weren't married. The surname as a middle name, Scott, is commonly an indication of that -- it would be the surname of the father. (My great-aunt, born c1890 before her mother married my gr-grfather, has her father's surname as a middle name, for instance.)

In that case the father's name would most likely not be entered on the birth certificate, but at least the mother's name would be known and you could try to trace her.

On a bit of a limb here...can't find a Violet Clarke in 1901...but as her middle name (if that's the right birth) may be Scott....considering this????
