*If* this is her it looks like she never married:

England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2005

Starr I'm assuming there's no father's name on the birth cert, in 1947 it would be very hard to bring up a child as a single parent, especially if there was no family to support her? Just after the war, was a hard time for everyone, men returning to the jobs that women had done in their absence... maybe it was just a case of her believing she was doing the very best for her child to have him adopted.

Very understandable, I would feel the same wanting to know the 'why' of it all.

I wonder as it is still 'recent' if there is anyone still in the area who knew her? Maybe a cousin who may have some knowledge. Might be worth looking at Gwendoline's parents and see if you can trace any siblings they might have had?

Starr. I'm guessing that your friend doesn't actually have his birth certificate if he was unsure wether he was born in Tonbridge or Maidstone?

That would be a good start in documenting the family history - where his mother was living when he was born.

Her death certificate would give her last place of residence and the informant might be a useful clue. Even if it was a hospital or care home there may be ways of tracing back to someone that knew her.

I work in a care establishment and I have held onto personal photos and possessions of someone who died many years ago in the hope that family will come looking!

On Ancestry there are telephone listings in 1980/82/84 for G M Lash. The address is 5 Balls Cottages main road Chattenden which I think is in the Hoo district so that might be another previous address for her.
