Thanks Quinsgran. I appreciate that people change names, but it's good to have someone with a logical explanation - and the other deceased child.

Hi Margaret.
You seem to be doing a sterling job. The information is logical and if Allyn Davies is agreeing with you. I go along with that too.
It was me who found Thomas Bellinger Staples

Some people change names for various reasons sometimes just because they want to.
I know a couple and his first name is Tom. His wife didnt find out till their wedding day that his real name was Hubert lol

An Allyn Davies on Ancestry is respoinsible for posting the amendment to Smith Davies, amended to Truth Davies, and I have contacted him.

He agrees all the other children I mentioned.

He has identified the second child of James Staples and Truth Hoskins as being William Charles born 1886 in Bedwelty. I have found that child in the births. The child died in 1889 in Bedwelty. That then completes the picture of 2 children having died by 1911.

It is Allyn's supposition that the father was so distressed at having a child with his own birth name die that he changed his own name. It's a touching story, and not one I would have thought of. But not impossible.

Perhaps Barry can tell us if he family he know were a particularly sensitive and emotional family?

Allyn maintains that Thomas B is Thomas Bellinger, as found by ?

IS ANYBODY OUT THERE TO SUPPORT ME????

Here's the summary so far. William Staples b 1827 m Sarah Billinger.

Son William C Staples (b 1862 Gosport/Portsmouth) comes to Wales with his mother and a sister Emma/Emily, mother now named Powell.

William C marries Truth Hoskins, parents Thomas and Jemima.

Children of William C and Truth include Thomas B, Cinderella (possibly Canderilla May), Wilfred, Stanley James Dec 1894, Olive and Clifford. We know Clifford died young. The 1911 census says 7 children born, we have only found 6, and 2 died.

William C decides to call himself James, unless there is something else happening of which I am not aware. No trace of a James Staples earlier at all, until he changes his name. He dies as James Staples.

Stanley James b 1894 marries Margaret Gunn in 1918. She is the daughter of Peter Campbell Gunn and Bertha Trigg.

Children are Kenneth G 1919 and Alma T 1921.

I was hoping somebody would support me or shoot me down as wrong.

Best I can do, Barry. The details are on the thread.

Does it all sound sensible to you?

Hi Barry,

I have only just discovered this discrepancy between James and William C. Need to think about it a bit more and see if others come up with anything.

I'll do a summary for you shortly.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 6 Mar 2010 21:03

I'm confident we have the right Staples family - but why has William C decided to call himself James? Didn't he like the name?

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 6 Mar 2010 21:00

Here's William C in 1871, no James:

Barry, I'll attempt to summarise for you when we get to that stage.

Is this a possible sister for your Kenneth?

England & Wales, Birth Index: 1916-2005
about Alma T Staples
Name: Alma T Staples
Mother's Maiden Surname: Gunn

Madmeg Report 6 Mar 2010 20:52

Sorry Barry, didn't realise Maureen had given you the name of Margaret Gunn. Now realise we did not have all 7 children of James and Truth:

1891 Wales Census
about Thomas B Staples
Name: Thomas B Staples
Age: 6
Estimated birth year: abt 1885
Relation: Son
Father's Name: William L
Mother's Name: Truth
Gender: Male
Where born: Abertylery, Monmouthshire, Wales

Civil parish: Aberystruth
Ecclesiastical parish: St Michael
Town: Cwmtyleri
County/Island: Monmouthshire
Country: Wales

Registration district: Bedwellty
Sub-registration district: Aberystruth
ED, institution, or vessel: 13
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
William L Staples 29
Truth Staples 26
Thomas B Staples 6
Cinderella Staples 1
Thomas Hoskins 62
William Davies 39

Confirms Truth's father as Hoskins. William Davies is a boarder.

But dad is William L, not James. And not even William C as Quinsgran said for the marriage. But it could be a C. Or a T. He's born Gosport, Hampshire. Is he James? Did James marry his brother's widow? Did he have a brother William L/C?

Can find no death of Cinderella.

It gets a bit odd now:

1881 Wales Census
about William C. Staples
Name: William C. Staples
Age: 19
Estimated birth year: abt 1862
Relation: Head
Mother's Name: Sarah
Gender: Male
Where born: Gosport

Civil parish: Aberystruth
County/Island: Monmouthshire
Country: Wales

Street Address: Cwmtillery Rd
Education: View image
Employment status: View image
Occupation: Coal Miner

Registration district: Bedwellty
Sub-registration district: Aberystruth
ED, institution, or vessel: 12b
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
William C. Staples 19
Sarah Powell 51 (mother)
Emily L. Staples 18 (sister)

And next door is Truth Hoskins and her father, Thomas.

Margaret.
I think you will find Kathleen Bell had given him that marriage. I dont know if he had the marriage cert. If so he would be further back with Stanley Staples father

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 5 Mar 2010 23:37

So you already knew that he married Margaret Gunn? Could you not have told us that?
