Paul Report 19 Mar 2010 08:06

i have checked the coes through the census and on the 1871
there is a joseph (son) who is 15 in 1861 he is 6.
i also found this
Name: Joseph Coe
Gender: Male
Birth Date: abt 1855
Christening Date: 15 Apr 1855
Christening Place: Cherry Hinton, Cambridgeshire, England
Father's Name: Joseph Coe
Mother's Name: Susan

i think this is the one, what do you think?

Ah but

could Joseph have told little piggies?

and told Elizabeth that he was called Josiah?

just another wild theory

Looks like this confirms Joseph senior was definetly Joseph not Josiah...

JOSEPH COE Pedigree
Male

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Event(s):
Birth:
Christening: 26 FEB 1826 Cherry Hinton, Cambridge, England

Death:
Burial:

Parents:
Father: MATHEW COE Family
Mother: MARY BARRON

Admittedly its a submitted entry, but probably enough clarification that he wasn`t Josiah..

Can`t find any sort of maintenance order.......been giving a bit of thought to maybe josiah`s father being Edith Mauds father as suggested earlier by Paul

I`ve traced Joseph and wife Susan {josiahs parents} back in every census till 1851, and found what I think is their marriage in 1848 hoping i may find evidence that Joseph was also a Josiah, but no such luck.

Paul states that Edith Maud never knew her mother....were the Dearsleys so ashamed of their daughter giving birth out of wedlock that they took the baby from her and cut themselves off from her?

Paul could you please put up every detail from Edith mauds birth cert please?...I`m especially intrested in who was the informant..............

Joseph seemed to be a Pub landlord/Gardner up until 1881 when he was a Railway Labourer and his son. an Ag. Lab ....could they have been working in the area where Elizabeth was a Servant?

You maybe right Paul, with any luck Nicky may turn a maintenance order up and it may tell you more?

Keeping my fingers crossed.

i did think that syer was a strange name. your explaination sounds good to me
unless it was the father joseph, because edith always lived with her grandfather and never knew her mum, so something very strange happened around that time. rumour was that her father was a traveller
great work people i really feel we are on the right tracks with this, thank for your effort
if of course you come up with anything else please post anybody wants to add then pls do
thanks very much once again

as a footnote, elizabeth was 25 when she had edith in 1884, josiah was 20 whereas joseph was 55? suspect a bit of adultery

Hi Nicky,

I can't understand why they never married either, maybe the Coe side wanted him to marry Anne, but then surely Elizabeths father would have had a say there???

Very strange...... that's why I wondered if there might be a maintenance order against Josiah?

Hi Dee and Maureen........Pretty sure your on the right track with Josiah/Joseph Syer, which is why I put up the marriage to Anne in 1885.

If you put just Joseph Syer in to freebmd with no surname you only get about 6 results....with none of the surnames remotely like Coe.........so think its just been written wrong for the birth cert. Wonder why they said they were married? if as it seems ,they wern`t, the fact Josiah married a year later, and Elizabeth not long after proves neither of them was widowed, and divorce very unlikely.....

Thanks Maureen.

I suppose Paul will never know for sure, but at least now he was a possible theory?

I wonder if the father paid a maintenance for Edith? Seems strange that he would be named on the birth cert and yet plays no sign of her upbringing?

Nickydownsouth Report 18 Mar 2010 13:23

so this is the marriage for Josiah Coe and Anne....only a year after Edith Mauds birth..

Marriages Dec 1885 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coe Josiah Linton 3b 1085
Dockerill Charles Linton 3b 1085
FARRINGTON Anne Linton 3b 1085
Gunnin Ellen Linton 3b 1085

Wonder wether the mariage cert. mentiones "previous marriage"??..........got a feeling he and Elizabeth may not have been married....

did Ediths birth certificate have an occupation on it for Joseph? Does it also give an address at the time of her birth?

i am so sorry for not having laid it out better, hope the following helps

ok edith maud is my mother in laws grandmother. i was looking for her under the name of dearsley, however it turns out from the copy of her birth certificate that the mother was Elizabeth coe formally dearsley. after her birth there is no record of edith maud coe only edith maud dearsley.
joseph syer coe is the father mention on the birth cert.
i can find no record of marriage for coe and dearsley
Elizabeth did go on to marry arthur william webb
