On the 1901 image William and Jane are not at the same address as the Barlows, but next door.

I have seen older children left at home that are working as William was like it on other census where the transcriber just lumps them in with one of the next door lot as they lack the word"head".

Wild theory time..
Williams middle name is Williams,so a Craggs/Williams marriage search throws up this very likely one for his parents.
And using the Mary E from Passenger lists it would seem even better.
And it is in the correct Reg District.

Marriages Mar 1883
CRAGGS William Sunderland 10a 763
WILLIAMS Mary Elizabeth Sunderland 10a 763

But of course we still come back to the William Williams Craggs birth cert being the only real way forward,or back as the case may be,for proof.

I have to go now.
I will have another try later.

Flick

Flick Report 31 Mar 2010 16:18

Well found, FBG, ref 1901 census

I looked at the image for relationships etc - and made the elementary error of not checking ALL the info

The Craggs children are residing at Barlow's Yard - nestling between 77 Ryhope St. South, and the Queen's Head Inn. It would seem reasonable to deduce that they were in some sort of one-roomed dwelling in the back yard of the Barlow home.

I have deleted all references to the Barlow family, to avoid possible further confusion.

The marriage you posted looks very promising

Rita
Well here is Robert Craggs 1750,but how Trebo/r connected your grandfather to it beats me.
I think you need to ask him if he has any certs to back it up.
Namely William Williams Craggs1885 and his parents marriage cert.

Or ask him to join us here to show us?

I have sent message to trebor to ask how he linkes william craggs too robert craggs

Rita

Rita Report 1 Apr 2010 11:09

trebo sent me the tree that he says links, but he got wiliam craggs d.o.b 1886, as wiliam henry craggs, had 4 siblings.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 1 Apr 2010 11:45

Then it would seem that his William Henry Craggs is not your William Williams Craggs and a different line of Craggs.

You really need to send for your Grandfathers birth cert from here.

www.gro.gov.uk

£7 per cert until April 6th when it goes to £9.25p

Where it asks if the GRO refs are known tick the "yes"box.
They are on the post that Flick gave of his birth.

This is the ONLY official Gov site, anywhere else will charge at least double if not more.

Without his birth cert you are well and truly stuck to be able to go back further.
And even then you may have to get his parents marriage cert after as this one is quite a difficult one to do without.

Rita

Rita Report 1 Apr 2010 12:18

ok thanks will do that, then post when i get it.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 1 Apr 2010 12:39

Thank you Rita.
It is the sensible thing to do.

See you back here when you have it and Flick and I will hopefully be able to help properly then.

Rita

Rita Report 1 Apr 2010 16:35

ok, i have sent off for birth cert, it says will not be sent till the 12 april,

Flick

Flick Report 1 Apr 2010 17:35

Keep us posted, Rita. We'll be around!

It's a good job you had the presence of mind to ask for verification before adding trebor's info to your tree - you'd have been in a bit of a pickle.

Rita

Rita Report 1 Apr 2010 18:05

yes,i seen his tree, but his william was 1886, not 1885, so i will wait for the birth cert.

Rita

Rita Report 17 Apr 2010 10:28

hi, i am still waiting for birth cert i order on first of april. hope it here soon.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 17 Apr 2010 10:33

Things are taking so long to arrive because the world and his wife ordered certs before the price went up to £9.25p on 6th April and now I think GRO are struggling badly.

I also have been waiting since 30th march for a cert.

In normal times they only took 5-7 days..

Rita

Rita Report 26 Apr 2010 13:28

got william williams craggs birth certificate. born 13/09/1885, mother mary williams, farther william craggs . birth reg on 08/11/1885.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 26 Apr 2010 13:38

Can you please give the address and what is Father William Craggs occupation is on it please..

So this as posted earlier would be his parents marriage then.

Marriages Mar 1883
CRAGGS William Sunderland 10a 763
WILLIAMS Mary Elizabeth Sunderland 10a 763

Which is going to be needed for their ages and fathers names and occupations.

Nothing is showing that I can find to be certain of to be able to go back from the 1901 census found by Flick where William 1885 is with sister Jane...

Maybe Flick can find something though?

Rita

Rita Report 26 Apr 2010 14:41

address is d'arcy street harthon i think it says, occupation is hard to see

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 26 Apr 2010 15:05

Every other person on that street in 1881/91 is either a coal miner ,shipwright or Sailor it seems,so he would be one of those occupations I would think.

Also son William was a coal miner on 1901.

I can find nothing for them on 1891,so as Flick says they must have been in America.
