I would appreciate any help with the following. I have my grandfathers birth certificate (16/7/1894) and it states that he was born in union infirmary fulham to a rose benham who was a general servant (domestic) at W---hold (?) Farm Hammersmith. No father named on the certificate. I would like any information on how to access records associated with the infirmary (and workhouse). I have tried to find both rose and william in the 1901 census, no luck so far. Mind you I have no idea were they were living at that time. William did tell his son that at one stage they were living at the Bulldog Hotel at Sheppards Bush, this could have been between 1900 to 1910. William gained employment as a cabin boy, he went to Australia, arrived in 1911, jumped ship in Sydney. When william enlisted with the Australian Imperial Forces in 1914, his next of kin was his mother Rose, she was then Rose Lewis of 90 cathnor road shepards bush, london. I have no idea of when her name changed from Benham to Lewis, nor her husbands christian name. According to his son, William talked about his mother, but not much about his father, he did say to his son that his father was William David Benham, I am not sure if that information is correct.
Thanks for any help. DMR from Oz

Thanks Jacky - I was only using the free search facility so couldn't get the details.
Mind you, I am wondering if we have the correct family as the William in that family has Henry as a middle name not Herbert and the birth is a wee bit out!! Seems a bit of a co-incidence though the mother's name?
EDIT
What a co-incidence - both Williams were registered in the same year and quarter!

William Herbert Benham lived in Australia from 1911. He did go back to England during 1919, but this was at Manchester, he returned to Australia in the same year. He also married while in Manchester to a ethel makin (25/1/1919). I have ordered their marriage certificate. From what William told his son, he did mention having 4 brothers, sorry no names. Mind you another time he told his son that he had 4 uncles. I have to admit I do not have a lot of reliable information. My uncle said that pop was a big cagy about his past. DMR form Oz

hi rootgatherer i tend to agree with you about it been the correct family it maybe just a coincidence that both william,s had mother,s called rose/rosina/rosanna maybe the marrige cert that has been sent for may give more clue.s with the witnesses to the marrige but not holding out much hope for dianne as the marriage was in manchester & looks like his family were in london from what dianne has said so the witnesses maybe frinds of ethel.s or her family unless some of his family travelled up from london for the wedding so looking forward to what infomation the cert holds

since I started this thread, I have made some breakthroughs re the Benham/Lewis family. The lewis family lived at 90 Cathnor Road, Shepherds bush for a few years. Rose and Thomas got married in 1915, but had been living as man and wife since 1899. I think I have found Rose and Thomas death notices. Thomas death 1919, Rose 1967. They had a number of children Alice Mary Lewis c1899 - born Acton Thomas Alfred Lewis c1904 - Shepherds bush Lilian Rose Lewis c1909 - Shepherds bush Edith H Lewis c1913 - Fulham District Ruth E Lewis c1914 - Fulham District found the family in the 1901 & 1911 census I have checked BDM, I have not found any D&M that relate to the children. I have ordered Ruth's birth certificate. No sign of William Herbert Benham in the 1901 or 1911 census. He was not with rose, thomas and family. I have checked different sites re crews on sailing ships to Australia, that arrived in Sydney, but left from southhampton from 1908 to 1911. Pop said he arrived in 1911.
Any help with records/information on any of the Lewis family members or William Herbert Benham would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks
Di

Hi
No Rosanna (Rose) had not. She and Thomas were living together and did not get married until 1915. Even in his WWI records he states that he is single. However he put his Next of Kin as Rosetta (?) Lewis - friend of 90 cathnor road, shepherds bush She had William Herbert Benham in 1894 @ fulham Infirmary.
If Thomas died in 1919 ,as I think he did. I wonder what happened to the children? Di

Mary Benham is her mother. Mary had rosanna in 1878 @ acton. Mary did marry George Augustus Caterer, they had 3 children. Mary also had another daughter Alice in 1882 (before she married George), both out of wedlock, however Mary did indicate on Mary's birth registration that Mary's father was William Mungo Benham, the same name was used for Alice's, but it was crossed out in 1883. I have not been able to find a marriage for William Mungo and Mary. I do not think she married a William Mungo, especially considering she was born Mary Benham.

Hi rootgatherer
Thanks for all your work on the lewis family and trying to find William Herbert Benham. As he was born in England I am sure he was there for awhile. I am starting to think he might have been unofficially adopted out to some other family or family member and there is the possibility we can not find him due to a transcription error. I am not sure I will even find out about his time in England. Maybe I should concentrate on finding out what ship he came to Australia on.

Hi Choccy I have just check death details (Ancestry) for Ann Ayres and she died in 1908. Also checked out the son - Reginald The sons name is Reginald David.
When pop died in 1972, there was a writeup as he was a WWI vet and it had that his name was William Herbert Reginald David Benham. Pop had told people over the years that was his name. It was not until after pop died that the family obtained his birth certificate and it only had the name William Herbert Benham.
I'd say that pop lived with the Ayres until Ann died or he could have left a bit later. He always said he arrived in Sydney on a sailing boat. Worked as a cabin boy.
Thanks
