Paul,

You have his full name now and a dob. What does the middle initial stand for? Have you tried Google and Gitrace.org?

Hi Rose,

Yes I have a full name and dob...His birth cert arrived the other day.

No fathers details....only mother...my gran.
The story about him being taken back to the US comes via my mothers half sister.
So I only have what she told me to go on.
I was thinking th GI might be US airforce....as there wasn't alot of GI's in UK in 1942..mainly Airforce.

If he was, say a was the member of a bomber crew..they returned back to the US after 25 missions. So if he had completed his 25 mission tour....then he could have gone home to the US with the child.

But this is speculation

Yes Jennifer,

Its a mystery......if he didn't go to the US,..then where was he from birth to 45?.

My grand married in 45....and I doubt she brought her illegitimate child with her to the marriage...and in any case..no sign of him with the family in any records.

But can't see any possible records of him going to US.

Oh well......maybe never know...

It seems unlikely to me a GI would take a child back to the US. Are there any reports of this happening?

Consider also Colin would have been conceived in 1941, so even earlier in the war.

Might be worth checking records for children's homes in the area, to see if he were sent there.

Without doubt the birth certificate would have had----Adopted --added outside in the last margin ,

Hi peeps..

Nope....not a mention of adoption on the cert...not anywhere.

There were US airman in the UK in 41..even 40..some flew in the Batlle of Britian..so there is still some chance his father was American....
Though gran could have mistaken a Canandian accent for a US one.

Sorry Rose, all I have is what my mother's half sister told my sister..who passed on the info to me. I take it her mother told her it was a US GI....I don't know.

She was the last person to have know my gran before she died.....and she said that's my her mother told her..tough gran was maybe a little out of it towards the end....I don't know...

I am amazed I have been able to confrim the story of an illegitimate child...with proof of a birth cert!....BUT!... I would so love to complete the story by finding his father.

Especially if he was with the US Airforce ..military aviation of ww2 is a passion of mine.

Saying he was taken back to the US might have been my gran trying to cover up the birth..when really he was still in the uk and didn't want her children trying to find him...

Or she was embarasssed about who the fling was with and said it was a GI when it wasn't....

OR!!....worse case senario....she was raped!...

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for your continuing interest.....

His middle name according to his birth cert is Clive.

So it "Colin Clive May" born 10/08/1942.

Mother: Marjorie Phyllis Edna May.

He was born at Battle Hospital in Reading.

Thats it really.
