Thanks Janey. I'm so new to all this so I appreciate your comments & help. I don't have any research on this but I will look into all you've posted & see how it fits in. Amazing that there is so much help & good will from all round the world. Thanks heaps! Pauline

Many thanks, also, Seaham for your contribution. I'm pretty sure the John you turned up would be the one!! Wow!

Do you have his date of birth from a marriage or death or other record in Australia? If you were lucky, he would have given parents' names on his marriage certificate. If you were really really lucky, whoever reported his death knew his parents' names and included them.

From the familysearch (Mormon) site:

JOHN TURNER
Christening: 07 FEB 1836 Hayfield, Derby, England
Father: WILLIAM TURNER
Mother: ANN
Batch No.: C054521

This would certainly fit a January birth, so it's a possibility to consider.

If you find that record at the url I gave, you can click on the batch number and search for other baptisms with the same parents.

Pauline, you have complete access to the same free sites that I have from Canada, or anyone from the UK has!

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/search_igi.asp

for parish records including pre-1837 (not complete, of course)

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl

for parish records -- a work in progress and not nearly complete now, but worth checking regularly

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

for BMD registrations starting in 1837

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=7572

for the 1881 English census at Ancestry

John Turner, of Hayfield, Derbyshire born 3.1.1836 was my Great Grandfather. I'm in Australia so don't have access to some of the UK free sites. Any of his ancestral history would be most helpful.

Many thanks Pauline
