How funny! A big thankyou to all who helped me on this thread. And to all of you who sent PMs. It is all coming together very nicely. Susan. x

Sorry for confusing the issue, I've got to start reading the thread more thoroughly before I respond. Of course, the birth of George was on page 1.

I am 99% sure that the George Dea found born 23/05/1837 and baptised 25/06/1837 at Walton on Thames is the right George. On the 1911 census he is 73 which would be right as he would be 74 in May 1911 therefore born in 1837.

According to my route planner it is only 1.7 miles between Walton on Thames and Hersham.

George was born in 1837 so this is probably the marriage:-

EDWARD GOREE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 20 NOV 1836 Walton On Thames, Surrey, England
Spouse: MARY PRATT

Catherine

Catherine Report 23 Apr 2010 15:42

I got confused because Dea has already posted George's birth on page one (born 1837 son of Edward and Mary)

Catherine

Catherine Report 23 Apr 2010 15:38

Yes Margaret, I've just realised that so have edited my posting.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 23 Apr 2010 15:37

You're confusing me now, Catherine! I was speaking of George, listed as son of Edward & Mary, possibly being a son of Mary but I can't find a marriage of Edward & Mary.

Catherine

Catherine Report 23 Apr 2010 15:32

I can't find a marriage for George and Clara either!

Do you want to hear a story?

I'm also wondering if they ever did marry. Maybe he married someone else, met Clara, left his wife to be with Clara but of course wouldn't be able to marry her and the couple just pretended to be married. Or vica versa, she may have already been married.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 23 Apr 2010 14:34

I was wondering if perhaps George was born before marriage and registered in mother's maiden name or first married name? I can't find marriage of his parents though.

Thankyou Margaret, i believe they are the siblings of George. Everyone on here are so kind. Susan x

If his first wife was Clara re 1901 then I think she died in 1897 so the 1885 marriage wouldn't have been his

I'm sure this is him in 1911 spelt GOREY. I think they filled in their own 1911 forms so I guess his age would be right 73 born 1838.

Eliza is his second wife as they have only been married 11 years and she has not had any children. There is a son Sam aged 43 on the census.
I can't find a marriage around 1900 to an Eliza but there is one in 1885 Southampton for a George Edward Goree to either an Ann Selina Dear or Jane Madden!!

Here's the 1911

Catherine Report 23 Apr 2010 11:29

Durnford came under the reg.dist. of Amesbury so I had a look at births for this district between 1845 and 1847 for Clara ? and only one came up:-

Births Dec 1847 (>99%)
BURROUGH Clara Amesbury 8 227

and extending the search to 1844 to 1848 one more showed:-

Births Mar 1848 (>99%)
LEACH Clara Amesbury 8 271

so both possible births for Clara, although not to be taken as gospil.

I think that is what i will have to do. Gone through a million Goree Marriages but cant find what i am looking for. Thankyou for your time Catherine, as always, it is very much appreciated. Susan.

Catherine

Catherine Report 23 Apr 2010 10:58

With a difficult name such as Goree, it might be an idea to buy the birth cert. of one of their children to find out the maiden name of Clara, and use this to find a marriage.

This is one birth that was quite easy to find:-
Births Jun 1867 (>99%)
GOREE Frederick Samuel S. Stoneham 2c 60
