I think it is unlikely that the couple will be together in Army barracks unless they were married.
The Army took a dim view of such things and permission had to be sort from a soldier's commanding officer before a marriage could take place. Only then could the wife come under the 'housing' of the Army.

Yes that is the one I spotted, so James Snr was in the Rifle Brigade?

So they are AWOL for sure 1871 (or maybe earlier) and then appear 1874 for birth of son.

oLIVE,

Taking a guess at when he would have joined the Army.....(there are Chelsea Pensioner records being scanned as we speak)

I would think by July this year his may be among them, I can remember talking to a guy about my own GG grandad who was CP, he told me they normally signed on for 12 years.......not sure if that is correct.

Have just followed the family to 1911, they are consistent with birthplaces and ages.........strange that James and Maria are missing from 1871 census..........you may be right Olive.........but not to be included on the UK census may mean they are out of the country with him serving.

Hi Victoria.
I wonder if that is Maria on your 1871 Census.

Her son was born 1874 James Henry Whitts 1874
Winchester ( Riffle Brigade) Army Birth and Baptisms vol 1071 page 45.
Which I found at the local library on Ancestry.

Do you know if James Whitts is on the Army Census 1871 please.
