Fan

it was compulsory to register births, as well as marriages and deaths, from July 1 1837

The difference was that the vicar had to send the information on m and d from the parish register to the local Registrar or Registry Office.

The onus on registering births was placed on the Registrar ...... he was supposed to find out about al births occurring in his district, then going to the house and taking down the information

That's where hundreds, perhaps thousands, of birth were missed.

Then the law was changed in mid-1874 to put the onus on the mother to go to the Registrar or local Registry Office.

In both instances, births were supposed to be registered within 6 weeks of the birth

True Fanny, but surely I should be able to pick up a marriage or death reg ?? could it be JANE ?? or JAMES ??
am delving away !!

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 6 May 2010 23:19

And of course it was not compulsory to reg a birth in 1846 dont forget.

And if he was a little on the wrong side of the blanket, which he may well be,then why go to more shame in front of the registrar ??

Toddy1

Toddy1 Report 6 May 2010 23:10
