Thank you Gwyn and Choccy for your efforts - all gratefully received, even if of the wrong sex!!

Am signing off now for tonight.

Hope to see some 'magic' on her tomorrow, please.

WHERE CAN HE BE???

Nicola'S Report 31 May 2010 22:24

I'm back again!
(Sorry, I should have typed 'here' on my previous post and not 'her' which might have confused peeps.)

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can someone try to look at this one with fresh eyes?

As I've said before, I feel that it is VERY unlikely that he left the UK. They were a tight family, widowed mama, spinster sister.

If only I could find whether he married, that might be a clue.

All/any suggestions always gratefully received. You're a set of stunning detectives and you've been marvellous in the past.

TVM.

Have you considered that his mother might have made a mistake

especially if Henry had very recently died.

and that in fact, she should have said 2 children dead.

Nicola'S Report 31 May 2010 22:55

Thank you Sylvia for that bit of detective work!

But, as I have mentioned, their family grave in All Soul's Cemetery (London) only contains the early departed father, followed by the son Douglas, then the widowed mother Beatrice and lastly the spinster daughter Jessie. Their records are wonderfully kept and they have been very helpful on all of this.

AND, I CANNOT FIND his death in London or elsewhere!!!

My hunch, and we need hunches don't we in this game?, is that he did marry - perhaps away from London. Only a hunch, though . . .

TVM again.

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 1 Jun 2010 21:10

Did Beatrice or Beatrice Jessie leave a Will naming Henry, or was he perhaps an informant of either of their deaths?
That would at least bring you forward a few years in searching.

Beejay Report 2 Jun 2010 07:39

I don't know if this is your Henry but came across this marriage in Southwark in 1902
Henry Harding age 32 widower occupation decorator to Rosina Emily Petts
Father Henry Harding deceased wine merchant
Now my eyes aren't what they should be but that's how I read his fathers occupation on the 1871 census
Have downloaded a copy of the cert in case it's of interest

Nicola'S Report 2 Jun 2010 17:26

Well done and thank you to Gwyn and Beejay.

My next step is to order the Wills of his mother and sister but was trying to save ££££'s!!!!

The marriage that Gwyn found is deffo him, so well done. But how odd that in 1902 he is marrying as a 'Widower' but in the 1901 census he is down as 'Single'. Incidentally, the 1901 was also difficult to find but his initials have been transcribed as 'H.C.K.' Harding - living in Abingdon Road.

But how on earth did you find that marriage, Gwyn?? With so many possible Henry Harding's to go at! PLEASE LET ME KNOW, so I can learn. And I am surprised that neither his mother nor sister appear as witnesses to this marriage - perhaps, I think, he may have married 'beneath him' as they say!!

Now - can anybody find his FIRST MARRIAGE, please?? Then
another mystery would be solved.

Grateful thanks for all your help so far.

Nicola'S

Nicola'S Report 2 Jun 2010 17:28

The revelation of the marriage in 1902 hasn't led me any closer to finding him in the 1911 census.

The only 'ROSINA [Emily] HARDING' that I can find shows her husband Henry Harding as being born in London. So, unfortunately, wrong this time.

Anyone else see anything, please?

Nicola'S

Nicola'S Report 2 Jun 2010 21:45

PLEASE don't get bored with me giving this yet another nudge this evening.

Clever Gwyn found his [second] marriage, which in itself is a bit puzzling as you will see from the thread; i.e., he is down as 'single' in the 1901 census, yet by 1902 he is marrying his second wife. Huh??

I will be back and forth to this thread all evening, so please don't desert me on this one. I feel that the answer is tantalisingly close; but I really cannot get on with the 1911 census, even with the revelation that he will have a 'Rosina' as his wife.

Thank you in advance.

Another little nudge in these wee small hours, please?

Thank you!

angelas ashes Report 3 Jun 2010 20:17

I know you have said that the Henry with wife Rosina in the 1911 is down as born in London but if you look they have only been married 8yrs even though there is a son named Henry age 13yrs...his occupation is house painter and in the 1901 was he a decorator? Was I right in reading that prior to that he was an electrician?
Have a look for Henry Harding age 2 in the 1901 census and see if you can find him with his mother..

Have you looked at the 1891 Wales census for henry harding born 1869 in manchester he is a prisoner, it may account for why you cannot find him.
