Hi Emma
John was born 1840 and lived in Maxwell Bank House, Troqueer up to 1861. He appears in census with his mother there. His father died 4 July 1857 in Maxwell Bank House. His father was a tea merchant and later a farmer. It always tickled me that a tea merchant lived in a house with a similar name to an instant coffee:-)
Thank you so much for your help it is very much appreciated.

I got this off a website and I found it quite usefull when I was searching my family tree ..
First son is named for the Father's Father. Second son is named for the Mother's Father. Third son is named for the Father's Father's Father. Fourth son is named for the Mother's Mother's Father. Fifth son is named for the Father's Mother's Father. Sixth son is named for the Mother's Father's Father. Seventh through Tenth sons are named for the Father's Great-Grandfathers. Tenth through Fourteenth sons for the Mother's Great-Grandfathers.
First daughter is named for the Mother's Mother. Second daughter is named for the Father's Mother. Third daughter is named for the Mother's Father's Mother. Fourth daughter is named for the Father's Father's Mother. Fifth daughter is named for the Mother's Mother's Mother. Sixth daughter is named for the Father's Mother's Mother. Seventh through tenth daughters are named for the Mother's Great-Grandmothers. Tenth through fourteenth daughters for the Father's Great-Grandmothers.
NOTES:
In some cases you will find that the order is reversed with the first and second children, i.e. the first-born son being named after the mother's father and the second-born son after the father's father. If this is the case then the daughters are also usually reversed.
You will also find instances where a child is named 'out of pattern', after an aunt or uncle who has died, or after an admired other relative or friend of the parent.
If a child dies in infancy, his or her name is often given to a subsequent child - a natural consequence of the high birth rate and infant mortality rates of past times.

Ann,
I have done a quick search for a marriage between a William Bisset and a Forbes between 1770 and 1854 a wide range I know but I thought I may aswell .. the results are ..
William Bisset Isabel Forbes 31 March 1777 NIGG (KINCADINE) - KINCARDINE
William Bisset Christian Forbes 20 November 1824 AUCHTERMUCHTY - FIFE
William Bisset Christian Forbes 13 January 1825
I can't seem to find a marriage on ScotlandsPeople in the Aberdeen area.
I've had a look on ancestry - and although i don't have a full subscription anymore I can still see a little information - there is someone on there that had an Isabel Forbes that married a William Bisset in the Aberdeen area although I can't see the date. They don't have parents for either William or Isabel but they do have that Isabel was born in 1785 and William was born in 1785 too.
Hope this was a little helpful although my search has not been too successful. I know how it feels though, I was looking for an ancester and I had exactly the right person I was looking for .. name and parents but when I looked up the birth it was in the 1600's instead of the 1700's which threw me a little.
Keep going tho! You will get there in the end.

Sorry

Hi Emma,
Fantastic - thank you so much for all your time spent searching. All I had was the date of marriage with no background info, everything you sent has been new to me.
Now to put it on to my tree, and study it :-))

(Findingmypast)
Sorry the dates you have given me are too recent to actually see online. You would need to go into Register House in Edinburgh to see that.
Births need to be at least 100 years old Marriages need to be at least 75 years old Deaths 50 years old
Sorry

Hi Emma
I have been looking through my records for loose ends and wonder if you could look for marriage and death for
John Carruthers born Ludlow Shropshire his father was John Carruthers who died in 1857 and his mother was Elizabeth Yates. I have him on the 1851 census. He was raised in Troqueer and he is mentioned in his aunts will in 1871.
If I am not being to cheeky I am also looking for the same information about his sister Agnes Annie Carruthers. She was born on 28 Sept 1855. Agnes appears with her mother on 1871 census in Dumfries. Out of 13 siblings these are the only 2 I am having trouble with.
Any help is very much appreciated

Emma
Thank you for your help Looking at the names of the father's for the Isabel Smith's you have found and the fact that family's tend to use the sames names for the next generation's, I think it could be either James or John.
I appreciate the help you given me Regards Val

Thank you Emma let me digest all of that see how it fits in. Much appreciated John

Hello Emma Thanks for kind offer. Hope I can explain this without it being too confusing, don't want to waste your time! On Family Search, extracted records I have William Bissett married Isabella ( or Isabel) Forbes at St Nicholas Aberdeen 1801. Have children that correspond to this. I then found a Euphemia Bisset b 1787 St Nicholas Aberdeen in 1787 to William Bisset and Isabel Forbes. Also extracted. I havent seen the marriage cert for William and Isabel so don't know their ages. It seems unlikely that this couple would have a child that long before marriage and still have more until 1807, which I have found. But it also seems unlikely that there is another couple with exactly the same names! A transciption error maybe. Sorry this is so long. Thanks for your time. Ann
