That 1851 census when he was a soldier does actually read the age of 19 but there is a big X over where they have checked it.

Do you have the actual 1860 marriage cert?

Which of the children of James and Harriet is your proven direct line?

Please give the RG refs for 1871 census where you think you have located James

Suzanne Report 21 May 2010 10:31

Harriet was living in Clerkenwell,London in 1851

James married Harriet Baxter in August 1860 at St Saviours Church Chelsea.
James occupation bizarrely is given as Shoemaker. I know he went onto be a soldiers in the Hussars as per 1871 census.
John Cooke occupation is given as bricklayer.

Aaaaaaaaaaarghhhhhhhhh

NEVER rely on anyone's research but your own, unless they provide documentary PROOF

Now - start from yourself, and work back through the generations.

We'll help, if we can...................

Who - and when/where - did James marry?

Do you have the marriage cert to confirm his father's details?

Suzanne

Suzanne Report 21 May 2010 10:24

I spotted that!.
I am working from some research that someone else has done.

I think there is a doubt about Sarah Burlow being the mother - this marriage would have made her 13 at best

He is not very consistant with his age is he? I can't even find him on the census of 1841!

When you say he is a soldier on the 1851 his birth year is 1837

The occupation, age, and informant's name will be on the cert

It's the only one in the area before 1841, with or without the final 'E'.

Of course, the father may have died before the GRO came into force................

Suzanne

Suzanne Report 21 May 2010 09:50

Hi I am trying to find out some info about my gg grandfather James Cooke who was baptised at St Michael and All Angels on 4 July 1833.
His parents were John Cooke (brickmaker) and Sarah Burlow. his sister Ann was born 1830.
I think his father John may have died soon after his birth.
On 1841 census Sarah is age 30 and living in Ledbury with Ann 12 and James 7.
I have found James on 1851 census. He is a soldier in Maidstone.
I cannot find Sarah.
Can anyone help?
Thank you
Suzanne
