Hi Lou,
what you have sent seems very likely to be the case. I was not aware of Joseph's death but, if he was the one I had it is quite probable that they named another child Joseph, ( They must have been running out of names!!)

Many thanls
Jim

Hi Jimbo,

I found this possible death for Joseph born 1892. Maybe they then had another son in 1896 and also called him Joseph. That could be the one on the census.

Regards, Lou

Hi Lulabelle,
this as a possibility although there seems to be some discrepancy in the ages of Richard & Joseph.
Borris road may be the one - the birth certificate I have for my grandfather says 'Borrif' but this may just be old fashioned writing.
I have some information from the baptism records of Portlaoise parish church showing baptismal dates for all the children I listed in my original query and I assumed that they were all baptised the year they were born - but this could be wrong I suppose.

Thanks for your help and I would be very grateful if you have anything further which may help me.

I can't get over to Ireland to carry out my own check as I am getting on a bit and don't move very well so all help is very gratefully received.

regards
Jimbo

jimbo659 Report 21 May 2010 10:10

My granddad was Edward Dempsey - born 1882 in Borrif Road Maryboro. His father was Richard and mother Margaret Brophey.
He had 10 siblings Mary 1883; Thomas 1885; John 1886; Sarah 1887; Christie 1888; Julia 1890; Joseph 1892; Patrick 1894; Richard 1895 & John 1896.
Edward moved to England (date unknown) He served in the British army until 1904 & again from 1915 - 1919. He was twice wounded and taken prisoner. He married Catherine Ryan in Bradford Yorkshire. He died in 1954.
I have been unable to get any information about his parents and siblings except that which I have listed. I would be very grateful for any information concerning Richard Dempsey and Margaret Brophey's lives and families.
Can anyone help me please?
Many thanks Jimbo659
