Sarah Smallwood (Skett) (1844-1887) had a daughter Ada Catherine (born 1872 in Aston Birmingham) who doesn't show on 1881 English Census. But a KATE Smallwood was living in Cirencester (aged 8) with an aunt Elizabeth Fisher. The Scottish Census 1991 shows a KATE Smallwood living and working in Glasgow for a wealthy family, and Sarah Smallwood, daughter Ann (born in Birmingham 1869) and son Charles (born Glasgow 1874) are also living in Glasgow. I'm trying to prove that KATE and Ada Catherine were the same person. Sarah Smallwood died at 61 Cathcart Street Glasgow (1887) and Ada Catherine gave that address as her residence on her marriage certificate in 1893.

Thomas Smallwood (father of Ada) did not have a sister Elizabeth so I am trying to find Sarah Skett's family and find out if she had a sister Elizabeth. That would confirm that KATE Smallwood is likely to be my ggrandmother Ada Catherine.

The Skett mystery is that on Sarah Skett death certificate her father is named as John (jobbing gardner) but her marriage certificate shows William. Perhaps he was William John Skett, I'm going to investigate that option further. Both certificates show mother as Sarah McFadden.

Thanks for all your information and for taking the time to help.

This is the 1851 household, in 1861.

Name: John Skett
Age: 54
Estimated birth year: abt 1807
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Susanna
Gender: Male
Where born: Northfield, Worcestershire, England

Civil parish: Northfield
County/Island: Worcestershire

Registration district: Kings Norton
Sub-registration district: Edgbaston

John Skett 54
Susanna Skett 46
Emma Skett 23
Penelope Skett 11
Christiana Skett 10
Joseph Skett 7

... so it looks like they're not the ones. Unless your Sarah's husband/children didn't know her mother's name when she died -- which is entirely possible.

Again, Lucy's birth certificate would provide an answer one way or the other.

I'm still not really clear. All you know about Sarah is the info from her (English) marriage certificate and (Scottish) death certificate? -- i.e. her parents' names, and then of course her husband and children.

What I was suggesting was that you get the birth certificate for one of the children in the 1851 household headed by a John. If the parents matched the names you have, that would give you the identities of her siblings and a little info about John, from the census record. I'd hoped that Penelope Skett might be unique -- certainly wasn't expecting to find two of them born in the same quarter in the same place!!

How about the Lucy in the 1851 household?

If the parents on the certificate were John Skett and Sarah McFadden, you'd have made a huge leap.

The Sarah I posted in 1851 seems likely to have belonged to that family, but to have been being cared for elsewhere. The info in that census record may be kind of suspect, given that she wasn't actually a family member. I wonder whether she might have been informally adopted *out*, rather than into the family?

Why are you wanting to find out whether she had a sister Elizabeth? -- i.e. is there some information to suggest she did have? Why not tell us?

Thanks for the information you found on Sarah Skett.

I'm looking for information on Sarah and her family (Skett). The details I have are from her marriage certificate. I also have her death certificate showing when and were she died but I know nothing about her family background.

I have searched for her birth certificate and found several Sarah A Sketts born around the same time but the details of parents don't match with my Sarah. I have also searched for John Skett and again found several but none of them seem to be who I'm looking for. I would like to find out if Sarah had a sister Elizabeth, but finding it difficult because I am unable to trace the family.

There's a family myth that someone was adopted, I am trying to prove it wasn't Sarah.

It's difficult for people to help with requests for "any information". You know her parents', husband's and children's names. Can you explain what information it is you're looking for? The Skett family from her father John Skett and back?

The children's surnames are obviously all Skett on the image; if this is your family, it could be useful to make a correction at Ancestry in case another family member searches for one of the children (and include an anonymous permanent online email address so you can be contacted anytime in future).

I'm looking for information about Sarah Ann Skett (1844-1887). Her father was John Skett and his wife was Sarah Ann McFadden. She married Thomas Smallwood in Birmingham (1868). Sarah had 3 children: Ann, Ada and Charles Smallwood. Sarah died in Glasgow in 1887. I'm looking for any other information about Sarah or the Skett family.
