Getting Caroline's birth certificate would at least give you Mary's maiden name.

Name: Caroline Nicholls
Record Type: Baptism
Date: 28 Jan 1838
Father's Name: Peter Nicholls Occ:Barge Builder
Mother's Name: Mary Nicholls
Parish: St Saviour
Borough: Southwark
County: Middlesex
Born Dec.26,1837

So very possibly this one:
FreeBMD
Births Mar 1838
NICHOLLS Caroline St Saviours 4 395

Anne of Green Gables

They are part of the same family (extended).

Patricia - you reached the same conclusion that the children born in wedlock, therefore, marriage before 1837.

Tracing the family tree in Sudbury from 1750 forwards, several are barge builders, and concluded that Peter moved from Sudbury to London as a barge builder.
Further speculation - perhaps Peter moved to London following death of wife Sarah, the mother of William.

Hope we can find some marriages to further investigate.

Thanks
Arthur

Have you got the family in 1841?
How do you know the second marriage was before 1837?
Thanks.

On the 1851 Census, Peter Nicholls (64) of Sudbury, Suffolk, is shown with wife Mary (49) of Sheerness, Kent, together with 3 children - William (35) born Sudbury,Amelia (20) born Chelsea and Caroline (13) born St Saviour.
I have traced a William Nicholls born to Peter & Sarah who was christened at St Gregory, Sudbury on 02 July 1815.
It is apparent that Peter has married twice and I am trying to find details of both marriages - difficult as they are before 1837.

Any assistance gratefully received.
