Thank you for the recent updates.

Dea - Yes , it definately says James is 28. In the census I posted James is shown to be born c1845, 20 years older than his wife Emily. In 1901 and 1911 it gives c1851 as his year of birth and he's now only 14 years older than Emily. The only thing not to change is place of birth.

Because I have the birth certificate of James Garratt born 13/4/1891 which names James Garratt and Emily nee Ingle as his parents, I know I have the right marriage, just need James seniors birth.

Moody Blue - Thank you for that marriage. On LDS, there is an extracted record for the marriage. James age is given as 46, Elizabeth as 39. My James would be about 20/25 I think. Strangely enough on Elizabeths death record she is 5 years younger than when she married 4 years earlier. I checked the record search pilot on familysearch but unfortunately the marriage isn't on there.

I have received the birth certificate of the James born in Dec q 1848. Parents named as Samuel and Alice so obviously not my James. Because the marriage certificate said James was 28 I have searched for a birth between 1840-1860 in Coventry under Garratt & Garrett and only the 1844 and 1848 ones are showing. I don't think I've got any choice but to order the 1844 one.

You say on page 1:

"I have just received his marriage certificate, he married Emily Ingle on 7/7/1884 in Walsall. His father was named as Daniel Garratt, a waggoner. Unfortunately witnesses do not help as neither are named Garratt. James gave his age as 28 and he was a widower."

Was his age on marriage cert really 28 ?? as this makes him 'way out' for the 1891 you posted?

Thank you for your thoughts. If the certificate I've ordered has Samuel as the father I will order the other one and see what that says. At least there are only two registered in Coventry.

James could have been illegitimate and invented a father called Daniel.

I will have to have another look and see if I can find Daniel whose occupation is waggoner but I don't hold out much hope.

If the birth cert I've ordered does not name father as Daniel, I might try a phone call to Coventry register office and see if I can get them to to check the births for me to see if they can find one with Daniel as dad.

I've see it where people getting married have said they are a bachelor or spinster when in fact they are widowed, but I can't see James saying widower if he hadn't been married before. What are your thoughts please.

The James Garratt with Lucy in 1881 is still married to her in 1901 - so rule them out.

There is always the chance that he wasn't registered. Although it was a legal requirement from 1837 in many cases it was down to the registrar to find and register the births, so of course many were missed.

Removed that census image because you noted that his father was Daniel and on that he was Samuel a Brick maker so obviously the wrong one!
